what is it?
i picked up what i figured to be a ford steering column, but is not. other that a couple numbers the only symbol i could find was a little ''iron cross'' with either an ''I'' or a ''1'' in the center
dan at larescorp
It looks to be off of a 40s Plymouth pickup
keiser31
It looks to be off of a 40s Plymouth pickupI think it is more like 1920s something....at least the steering wheel spoke part, but Dan knows his columns.
dan at larescorp
You're correct John, I don't believe the steering wheel is correct for that column.
28 Chrysler
The grease Zerk, column drop and the control rod at the bottom makes me think it is 1920's/30's
what is it?
my thought exactly looks very 20's-30's
Spinneyhill
Spark and accelerator in the middle with no headlight switch on the bottom = '20s? Oil fitting is for push-and-twist-on Alemite (?) gun type. Size of the thing looks like a larger, heavier car? I would think there will be a brand and casting number under the oil and dirt on the box body?
dan at larescorp
We just rebuilt a 1941 Plymouth pickup gear that was very close to this. That being said, it could be off of an older vehicle. I just haven't found one that looks any closer yet. I'll continue searching to try and find something.
c49er
Thats way older than a early 40's Ply/Dodge PU. Gear box shape is different too.I'd say 20's also.
dan at larescorp
Dodge and Plymouth pickups didn't use the same gear in the early 40's. Cars were more interchangeable. I'll continue to search some earlier models till I find an exact match.
dan at larescorp
I think I've found it. It looks like a 1929 Chrysler gear. Here are some photos of the last one we rebuilt.I also found the photos of the 1941 Plymouth pickup gear that I was referencing earlier. There are some differences that would have been easily notable if I had found these photos earlier. Forgive me, I can only refer to my memory (as scary as that sounds ) until I find these photos. Binger
Looks a lot like '30 Chev. The steering Spider prolly is. But it may not be correct for the column. I will have to go and look at my spare parts pile. The alemite fitting works for that era too.
what is it?
while it looks really close its not exactly the same.......still maybe mopar though?

Ivan Saxton
It looks typical of Gemmer, which came in several different sizes. Dimensions would be useful to determine what it could be used for; if it is not badly worn. It is not surprising that it is from a left hand drive car, but it could replace a missing right hand drive box if you can run the shaft with the worm gear underneath instead of on top; and then it will steer in the right direction. Dandy Dave
If the shaft is solid, That would mean no horn button in the center of the wheel either. Dandy Dave!
