Guest wwwagner
Anyone tried to put hard valve seats in a '58 364? Seems the material is too thin to bore deep enough to insert even a short hardened seat. Leaking water into the cylinders. Even tried welding more material to the bottom of the seat area. Any help? Smartin
You shouldn't need them, unless you are trying to repair a recessed seat. And in that case, toss it in the trash and find another head.
JohnD1956
Just to expand a little on Adams reply, Buick engineered their valve seats with a high nickel content to begin with, thus the seats are already hardened. If you bored the area deeper or wider and now find leaking from the head into the cylinder then the bore has compromised the water jacket in the head. Repairs of this nature may mean the head is ruined.
old-tank
Something else you might investigate: for a Buick 322 with recessed seats the valve from an early 364 which is slightly larger can be used. I don't know if later nailhead valves are larger than yours.Willie
