Guest Rp1967
If your friend is confident that the rear axel is original andIF you can find the build sheet ( sometimes under the rear seat) and If it's still intact the option is G80 for limited slip diff. Brad Conley
There should also be an aluminum tag located at the 5 o'clock position of the rear end cover that will say "USE LIMITED SLIP DIFF. FLUID ONLY" . This is NOT a positive way to say for sure as the tag may have been added by someone over the years, but it's an easy way to just look and see. For positive identification, use the method described by tenugent in the post above.
NTX5467
Absolute BEST way is to remove the rear cover and look inside, which the ultimate owner might want to do anyway. In the center of the differential case, you should see "springs, or an S-shaped spring" and clutch plates (usually plates) in there. The spring(s) keep the two axles locked together until a corner is encountered and one wheel turns faster than the other one (which requires either the grease+Limited Slip Additive, the later style, or the specific-to-PosiTraction axles GM lube, the earlier stuff).NTX5467
