Guest Bob Call
Martin1950 DeSoto is a good reliable car when in good condition. My first Chrysler product was a 1950 DeSoto Custom 4 door. Never failed to start, ran good, fair gas mileage. Most parts are readily available with the exception of the Sisson choke and electrical parts for the transmission. When they turn up are usually pricey. Trans solenoids and governor are reliable and usually only problem is dirty points which can be cleaned with plain white printer paper. The points are silver and anything more abrasive can ruin them. Biggest problem is with old frayed or broken wiring to choke and trans.49 thru 54 6 cylinder cars are basically the same mechanically with yearly slight body changes. DeSotos of these years shared a lot of mechanical and body parts with the same year 6 cylinder Chryslers. 1950 was the year of highest production of DeSotos with over 100,000 4 door sedans made so there are still a lot of them around. Acquisition cost should be fairly reasonable. Edited February 23, 2015 by Bob Call (see edit history)
