'55 special manual transmission problems

Amu

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I have 1955 buick special with 264 nailhead and 3-speed manual tranny (5 bolt cover light duty). Transmisson was broken when i bought it and it makes horrible noise and gears slip back to neutral. I got it out and took it to the repairshop. Apparently my transmission is beyond repair or its hard/impossible to get parts or it gets ridicilously expensive to repair here in Finland. My questions are: i can get manual 3-speed transmission from '58 super. Does it fit to '55 264 or any tips where i could get working tranny? The car doesnt have 'three on tree' type stick but stick is on the floor. Any ideas?

thanks!

Amu - from Finland.

I don`t Think you can use this transmission from 1958 just becuse in 1956 they changed the splines on the universal joint to twise as much splines and the bult patterna on the bell housing are different against the Engine too.I Think you had better search for an little bit older transmisson in that case? But be sure there are the same leght.

Which one is 'stick on the floor'?...the 55 or the 58. Pictures of both would help. Any column shift transmission could be made to work as a floor shift with adapters, but some floor shift transmissions are dedicated floor only (top loaders). Also be sure the 58 Buick has a torque tube; if not then even a transmission from a different make could have been adapted.

Thanks for the replies. Transmission from '58 had torque tube so i think its original. Unfortunately i dont have a picture though. Stick on the floor is on my '55.

Here is pic from the broken tranny.. post-96664-143142924053_thumb.jpg

Im pretty sure this tranny from my '55 is original. Somebody have done some modifications and moved stick on the floor.

I can say without a doubt the 55 fits the 54 264 bell housing. There was only minor changes to the input shaft. A 55 trans worked on my 54 264 without issue. Mr. Earl has a 6 bolt for sale. I believe the 6 bolt should mate up with your bell housing/block.

See if this will be of any help:

What is broken exactly? Bearings and some gears can still be found for these transmission.

Probably used the floor shift & top cover from a 1937 or 1938

Numerous parts are found here. http://www.classicnosparts.com/products-page/buick/

Ebay contains a few parts

The front bearing for the input shaft can be purchased new if I'm not mistaken. Unitized as well.

I would like to add...look back in years for a replacement transmission. This particular gearbox appears to be the same from 39-55. The only change is the tail shaft portion that bolts together with the gearbox. I suspect your tail shaft housing, etc is fine. Split that off the actual gearbox and bolt on the replacement.

1939 seres 40 are different from 1940 and later. Many internal parts are different. '39's used cables for changing where as '40's and later were rods (better). I have no idea if 1940 to 1955 swap

My mistake. :) 49-55 appear to be the same gearbox. Part #s match, etc. Might be better luck searching for a complete or parts from 49-55 instead of looking forward in years 56-58.

If you decide what you want to do you can pm me. Everything is available to fix your trans. I found front and rear main bearings and throughout bearing at OReily's auto for 75.00. If you need a new clutch disc and pressure plate, 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder is modern replecement for 125.00 and bolts on flywheel exact replacement and works better than original. Google OReily's, if you need part numbers, lemme know. I have parts for these transmissions.OTE=Amu;1382887]Thanks for the replies. Transmission from '58 had torque tube so i think its original. 1954 and 1955 Special 3 speed Buick only exact bolt in for your car. 1958 is larger and slightly different bolt pattern on your 1955 Special bellhousing. The transmission may have failed because of the floor shift mechanism malfuntioning and sometimes putting the transmission in two gears at once from wear or poor engineering. If you no longer have column linkage, you may want to consider reinstalling it so it can be correctly adjusted.E=Amu;1382887]Thanks for the replies. Getting back on this thread...

- Counter gear

- first and reverse gear

- main shaft pilot roller bearing

- Transmission gasket kit or any available gaskets

post-96664-143142971825_thumb.jpg

im not sure how those translate in english. Ive already asked parts from classic nos parts (havent got ansver yet). Do you know any other places i could ask those parts? Or do anybody happen to have those saved.

thanks again

Might inquire with the seller of this gear cluster. Does not show fitting a 40 series but perhaps it does.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1941-54-BUICK-OLDSMOBILE-TRANSMISSION-CLUSTER-GEAR-60-70-80-90-SERIES/331186343575?_trksid=p2054897.c100204.m3164&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140407115239%26meid%3D7224ec31f8f44181942cababc7283662%26pid%3D100204%26rk%3D26%26rkt%3D30%26sd%3D390478413782

I believe the gasket kit can be had from Oldbuickparts.com. I know these kits are out there. You can cut you own as well.

thanks for the links Chris! That second links cluster gear is rightm, tooth count matches and all. Transmission from that '41 looks good too. I have to do some research if the parts are interchangeable..that transmission would be great for parts.

The gear on the fork that slides I have not found as yet. Number 4417 as shown in your diagram. What is the proper name of the gear? Hub slider gear or something like that? Hard to search without the proper name. With any luck the 41 gearbox is interchangeable.

Gearman on Ebay has other parts. I purchased new syncho from him. $45.00 each. Mine was broken. It appears he might have everything you need. Contact him.

In this diagram similar part with 4417 part is named: gear, first and reverse. ye it actually slides from gear to another with that fork.

Hey

of course i appreciate all this Chris and Earl! Thank you very much! These parts are pain to get where im coming from. If it would be some fifties european car like merc or volvo it would be a different story.

few parts on the way so it may look like this tranny could run again.... fingers crossed.

Im confused... that really looks like right one but tooth count doesnt match. it has 17-15-19. Mine has 17-15-20 and it looks like this would be right:

I would say it does not work. Reading the description it appears this gear cluster was used for 1 year of manufacturing in 1939.
