MSD coils are installed, I think they look and run excellently.

A couple related questions though:

I like the E3 plugs. However, their plugs don't look possible to gap, and I know the Delco style coils run a different gap than the Magnavox. However, the cross ref I found lists the same plug for every Reatta despite the 91 having the Delco ignition?

Also, is there a different plug wire set for the Delco ignition? A couple of the wires seem oddly aligned.

No different wire set. Since you already have lost a point for the incorrect ICM/coils, you don't have to worry much about getting the correct color wire set with proper Delco markings.

From what I can figure out, there was originally a different spark gap for the Rapidfire #3 plugs with the Maggy ICM in 88. They improved on those plugs and then came out with the Rapidfire #14s and changed the recommended plug gap for all years and ICMs to the current spec with new plug. I don't think they still produce the RF 3s anymore but you can probably run across some NOS ones if you tried. Those might need the old wider gap if you were to use them but all the newer plugs can use the new standard gap with either ICM module.

You aren't supposed adjust the gap on your E3s, so don't even try. They should be fine as is.

You should be able to look at that pic and see about 30 lost points. If that offends anyone, oops. I was talking about the lengths of the wires, the part numbers are different when I look them up? Not sure if that's because there are like 15 different manufacturers or because the spacing plug to coil pack is different from the Magnavox to the Delco. Can the Magnavox wires be rerouted?

Thanks for the spark plug info. I never would have figured that one out, there is a ton of info out there, mainly from plug manufacturers who will say anything to sell product.

PD,

I believe that the plug wires for the Magnavox coils have a few that are longer because they have to route around the coil pack to the three posts on the other side of the unit whereas the posts on the Delco unit are all on one side. For example, when you "upgrade" to the Delco unit, you don't have to change the wireset. But, if you were to go the other way (original Delco to the Magnavox unit) a couple of the wire would be too short because of the extra distance they have to go. This is why there's different part numbers.

Hope that makes sense.

Sounds like we need someone who owns a 91 and an older model or two to chime in on the differences between how the wires fit. Any volunteers?

  • 1 month later...

I just completed the Magnavox to AC coil swap on my 90 convertible. I followed several threads on this and it seems like the same question about the plug wires comes up and never really gets answered. I replaced my wires with the set listed for the 91 models. I purchased them through the ROJ (for less than the parts houses sell them). The AC Delco number is 9626D. They work really well.

Hope this helps some of you.

Well if you have a CS-130 alternator the plug wires fit underneath. With a CS-144 they don't.

#3s were gapped .045, #14s .060. You were not supposed to regap the original carbon tip but after they converted to platinum it recommended gapping.

The lengths of the 1990 (Magnavox ignition) set AC 9616V are listed as 18, 28, 28, 36, 36 and 40 inches. The lengths of the 1991 (AC ignition) are listed as 16, 20, 22, 36, 36, and 40 inches. So the 1991 set doesn't leave the big extra loops that you have with the old set.
