RICK YOUNG
Greetings Forum Folks You can now count me in as a GS owner. Recently purchased a 72 GS 455 original Fire Red with Black Vinyl top. The chassis number correctly identifies the GS and 455 (non Stage 1). It is a Flint car The block casting # is 1238861 with 455 above which is correct I believe The "WF" is stamped correctly between 5 and 7 on top face of the block. So far I think I have a "correct" block. Trying to verify a "matching" engine. 1st question? directly to the right of the "WF" it is stamped "0b4". What is the 0b4? 2nd question? I removed the power steering pump. No Engine number there on front of block on driver side. I used paint remover over on the passenger side in front of the Oil pressure sender. Nothing there either. Do I need to pull timing cover off to find it on the passenger side? Thank you for any input. sean1997
0b4 is actually 064 and is some sort of build date code. It was a common practice for Buick to use an I as a 1 and b as as 6 or 9 when stamping numbers to make it harder to alter them. I've attached some pictures of 1972 engine number stamps. You might want to check all of those locations just to be sure. I know #4 is from a 1972 GS 455. The 1972 chassis manual shows the engine number location like that shown in picture #3.
