How to remove u-joint drive shaft 1937 GM

Hello,

I would like to re-greas, clean or replace my u-joints, but can't figure out how to remove from the drive shaft... Searching, and YouTube show clips, mine just has a "plug"?

can someone help illustrate how to remove the u-joints,

I usually set the end (u-joint) on a socket slightly larger than the diameter of the cap and tap the opposite end until the lower cap comes off. Then tap the u-joint the other direction until the final cap comes off. Watch this YouTube video.....

Or press them out with a vise or press. I prefer this method to pounding as it is less likely to damage anything. You need 2 sockets for this, one big enough that the cup can go into it, the other small enough to follow the other cup through the hole.

You push one cup out, remove it, turn the UJ to the side and it comes out.

Some of the cars have a plastic injected to retain the caps. If it has the plastic, some heat on the area of the drive shaft will have the plastic squirting out of a hole and then the cap can be pressed off as explained earlier

When you state that your's has "just a plug", do you mean a little pipe plug that you can unscrew? If so, just remove it and replace it with the appropriate size grease fitting. If not, just follow the advice above.

Larry, I doubt that GM did inject plastic in 1937!

I agree, but there might have been something else. Just a thought.
