bob duffer Posted August 22, 2014 Share Posted August 22, 2014 I have this metal guard (heat shield) on my choke housing in my 56 thunderbird , does anyone else have this ? i never see them on any other cars.Will it hurt anything if i take it off. carbking Posted August 23, 2014 Share Posted August 23, 2014 The heat shield on the choke was to prevent air from the fan from cooling the choke. Cooling the choke could cause the secondary lockout to prevent the secondaries from opening. And would most definately contribute to poor fuel economy. Used on lots of different applications. Sometime look at the monster used on mid '50's Cadillacs. I would leave it in place. To quote a good friend Tom V. from the Pontiac forums: "Engineers do things for a reason"!Jon.
