Will these hubcaps fit?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

i just found on ebay a set of 1951 hubcaps (for me they look new and not used) and ask myself :

1. Is there a company who produce new hubcaps like those?

2. Will these caps fit to my 1950 Chieftain SilverStreak 8 cyl. 2 Door Sedan?

Has someone a picture of the ORIGINAL hubcaps of a 1950 Chieftain SilverStreak. I saw a lot of different caps on pics of 1950 Chieftains and dont know, which one are the correct caps.

Hallo, Grüße aus Amerika, Yes they will fit, but they are not correct for 1950 Pontiac. A 49 & 50 deluxe wheel cover should be like this, click on the link:

Hello #helfen,

thanks for your answer and for the link.

My last question to the caps is now : For what modell are the caps with the indian head shown in my link above, really Chieftain 1951?

Thanks for an answer

The Deluxe wheel cover for 1951 could be ordered on all 1951 models ( Chieftain or Chieftain or Catalina), but they are a option. The standard wheel treatment is not a wheel cover though, it's called a hub cap. Optional with the hub cap is a wheel trim ring.

Picture #1 is a Super Deluxe Catalina with the optional Wheel cover, click on the link:

http://whitelaceinn.com/51pontiac/1951%20Pontiac%20hdtp01.jpg

Picture #2 is a basic standard Chieftain with the standard hub cap;

Picture #3 is a deluxe wagon with hub cap and optional wheel trim ring;

http://www.petesretros.com/wagon37.jpg

It's interesting to note that it's obvious that most of the cars that survive today have deluxe wheel covers.

When my dad ordered our 1950 Chieftain deluxe he didn't like any of the Pontiac wheel/hub coverings. He went out right away and bought 1948-49 Cadillac sombrero wheel covers for our car. Those wheel covers were a hit with all the kids in those days. see the link:

Hello #helfen

you are right, it is a 8 cylinder Flathead, 3 gear, manual shifted. The car has a sign each site " SILVER 8 STREAK". No idea how to know if it is really a Silverstreak. On the 3. of September I have a date with the German TÜV, to check the car. Then I can post the numbers of the plate on the firewall. Hopefully you can tell me than the exact type of my new baby.

When i have the German licence plate i can drive some miles to check what technical components i have to rework. The first miles were ok, motor is running and starting perfekt. The mechanic under the car as well as the seats are already reworked by the previous owner. Looks like a fine rework. The generator and the regulator i already reworked myself. Will send some pictures from under the car as soon as I get the car back from the garage which in the moment is stopping the leaking of oil somewhere in the area of the noun ( is that the correct english word? )

Thank you for your interest.

Wilhelm, All Pontiac's from 1935 to 1956 have silver streaks on their hoods and most on their trunks or sometimes the top of the rear fenders. The streaks were a styling statement which made Pontiac's easily recognizable from a distance, a sort of brand image like BMW's front grille or Pontiac's split grille from 1959 ( 1960 the exception ) to the end of the Pontiac brand. Here is a picture of your cars year hood with silver streak stainless molding. You will notice that the picture is a deluxe model, which has chrome headlamp bezels. Standard chieftains bezels are painted body color;

http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/4/273/1301/38180650001_original.jpg?v=1

Here is the last year Silver Streak styling was used on a Pontiac. The Year is 1956 and 1955 and 1956 Pontiac's utilize Two Streaks on the hood and rear fenders. I forgot to mention that 53 Pontiac's have two silver streaks on the hood and one on the deck lid;

http://www.pontiacuk.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/1956pontiacstarchief_customcatalinacoupe_SSU825.jpg

I am very curious to know what technical components need to be reworked on your car? In the U.S.A. a car only has to have what came on the car originally from the factory new to be road worthy. From a collectors point of view taking away a cars originality is not a good thing to do!

Not sure what you mean in the statement below "area of the noun" so just say it in German. I speak some German as both sets of my grandparents came from there and I have been back home a few times.

Will send some pictures from under the car as soon as I get the car back from the garage which in the moment is stopping the leaking of oil somewhere in the area of the noun ( is that the correct English word? )

Hello #helfen,

nice that I meet again a guy from america whose roots are in Germany. I worked some weeks in the USA (Hardford, Connecticut), there I also met a lot of peole with some kind of german roots, funny. Where have you been in Germany? I live in Düsseldorf, beside Cologne.

Again a big thank you for your explanations and links. Very interesting, your informations. Now I know why the Pontiac is called Silverstreak. On my pontiac is also written on both sides of the car the name "Silver8Streak". That is reason why I thought that was a special model. Now I know it better, thanks. Here you can see what i mean:

post-102557-143142687866_thumb.jpg

Sorry for my stupidness, I took the wrong word out of my online-dictionary, it should not be "noun" but "transmission shaft". In Germany we call it Kardanwelle.

Rework in my opinion means to bring the original parts back to their original function or looking. For example I have to

- renew the complete wiring because the one in my car is in a very bad condition

- renew the complete chrome

- renew the painting

- renew all windows because most a them are in a bad condition

- overhaul the stearingbox (LENKGETRIEBE) because I can turn my sterringwheel approx. 20cm to the left and right but nothing happens to the wheels

- overhaul the carburator, its leaking

- repair a bend of the frame in the front bumper area and the bumper itself, because the car must have an accident in that area. The bumber including the frame is completely shift for min. 10cm to the left side, some holes are in the chrome from the accident, have a look

post-102557-143142687874_thumb.jpg

and so on and on.........

But at all the car seems to be in a very good conditon for a 64 year old car.

I'm not going to replace original parts with second party parts as long as i can restore those.

I did this kind of rework on my old motorbike (Modell 1972) the last three years and the result you may see here

post-102557-143142687884_thumb.jpg

Now i need a new job :-)

very nice 1972 honda CB750, mr helfen gave you very good advise, your pontiac is a 1950 pontiac chieftain business coupe, silver streak was what pontiac called the engine then, a six cylinder was called the silver streak, the eight cylinder was called the silver8streak.

Hey Charles! I beg to differ on Wilhelm's car. Wilhelm's car is a 2 dr sedan not a business coupe....look at the long roof and the larger rear quarter glass.

You know I was trying to get back here to this site before you because I misspoke in my above thread saying 55-56 cars had dual ft hood silver streaks. Over dinner I suddenly realized 53's have two streaks on the hood too.....I'm glad you missed that one! As you can see I added it to the thread. Thanks for backing me up on the 54 Pontiac A/C as being first to incorporate all under the hood AC components in the General section.

Wilhelm, you have a very nice car ! I have been to many places in Germany. Grandparents on my dad's side are from Kiel (Grandfather) and Konigsberg (grandmother). My moms side is from the Saarland. The list of German cities and towns is very long, but I have been to Dusseldorf and Cologne to name a couple plus the folks cities. I have friends in the town of Neumarkt. I have traveled to all of the German speaking countries of Europe.

As you might know German might have become the official language of the states, and the original English language in England was German. Most people today don't realize that it was the German tribes that pushed the the indigenous people mainly the Celts into the remote parts of the UK. When we call Brits Anglo-Saxon, we are talking about Angles and Saxons which are tribes from Germany!

Here are some of the cars I own.

1965 Type 111 VW Beetle "A" Sedan I bought in August 1968;

http://www.pismoderelicts.com/photogallery/new%20format%20834/images/img_0135_edited_1.jpg That's all original chrome!

1969 Pontiac LeMans I special ordered in December 1968. Original chrome, interior and vinyl roof. Engine; .030 over 455 cubic inch or 7.5L

1976 Oldsmobile Omega Brougham. Special ordered new in 1976, still in it's original paint and interior, even the engine paint is original.

Hello #helfen,

yes I know that the hole british empire is based on early germans :-).

The whole royal family is a result of "marriage-politics" in the european mid-age :-)

I also know that the german language nearly became the offical language in the USA, for me today it would be better :-), I would have it easier to communicate with you

I like your beetles, they are a real wonder concerning quality and shape, yours look like new.

A very nice detail is the old metal ADAC-sign on your beetle, very rare.

The chrome is unbelievable.

That will be from now on the target for my pontiacs chrome too.

Also your pontiac LeMans looks very beautiful, the motorroom and the motor itself looks marvellous.

Have a nice day all together

Wilhelm

Hi Wilhelm:

If you still need a set of the "sombrero" wheel covers, I have a set I bought but cannot use as the Canadian Pontiacs had a different rim (actually Chevrolet) and they use a different 'dog dish' hubcap.

They are the same as the earlier link posted:
