Question on muffler

I bought a Magnaflow universal muffler for my 89 Reatta, it's 21/2 inch diameter all around. My exhaust pipe to the muffler is 21/4 inch , I realize I have to use an adapter for the inlet of the muffler. My question is, should I reduce down to 2 inch on the two outlets, which is what's on this 89 from the factory, or should I increase the size to 21/4 inch. Does it matter that much.

Taking a shot in the dark as the nephew of an exhaust guy, I wouldn't think the extra quarter inch on the outlets is going to hurt anything unless you wanted to reuse the original outlets. I went from the original muffler to a stainless with 2 2.25in outlets, then to the camaro style muffler with 2 2in outlets, one on either side. The back pressure isn't really effected much by the outlets, it is more by the baffles in the muffler, cat converter, etc.

You are probably right about about that difference in size. After looking at this muffler , I noticed the inlet is on the same side as one of the outlets. So I think I'll run an outlet on each side of the car , instead of the dual outlets on one side. I also think I'll keep it 2 1/4 inches on the outlets and see what happens.

That's really similar to the setup I'm running and it hasn't inhibited performance or thrown a code. Ya gotta figure as far as back pressure goes, going from original to (loud) aftermarket the lack of baffles will drop the back pressure considerably. The outlet size is really inconsequential. I found the performance change to be much more dramatic installing an aftermarket low restriction air filter. The sound with the dual outlets on an aftermarket camaro muffler is incredible though. I ran open exhaust for a couple days before I could get it out to my uncle's shop, when I first bought the car. The factory muffler collapsed from sitting then exploded. Even so, no codes or poor running with open pipe. Hope this helped.

I'm going to have a muffler shop install the muffler with the single configuration on each side. I'll have to cut out the plastic on the other side to match the other one, but that's not a problem. I really hate to do that, since the car is all original , but from what I've read, they only take off a couple of points at car shows. I guess it would depend on what type of car show you would enter the car. I'm also going to disconnect the ground on the battery, I hear it's a good thing to do, if you are doing any kind of electrical welding because of stray currents.

I'm glad to hear you did not throw any codes with those open pipes, I was a little worried about this muffler, but I'm sure it will be okay.

For the last month I've been running a straight pipe instead of a muffler.its really not that loud because the cat restricts the exhaust so bad.I had a flowmaster so it for a while but removed it because I thought it was droning.turned out to be a rear wheel bearing going bad.

I'm glad to hear you found your problem with that wheel bearing. I had to pull off my muffler project because of an electrical problem. But when I get it fixed I'll have this muffler installed and I'll let you know what I think about this particular muffler. Thanks

I thought I had an exhaust drone too and it turned out to be a wheel bearing. Small world. Then the aftermarket wheel bearing gave up too.

Gotta question,

I hope it can be answered in the next few hours. In the photo below, there is a strut that is welded to the right (passenger) side of the muffler, that goes between the bracket on the side of the muffler and the rear exhaust pipe. This one is on my '90 and I believe that it came from the factory that way.

Could a couple of you guys with cars that have the original muffler still on, check your cars and tell me if there is this strut on the muffler?

If there is one, can you please include your model year?

I'm having a muffler installed today and I'm trying to have it installed so it looks "factory".

OK, here's the low-down given on the down-low regarding the muffler I mentioned in an earlier post.

I found the supplier at the top of this Forum in the rolling/scrolling ads that change from time to time. It came from Waldron’s Exhaust. They were very helpful and accommodating. They provided the muffler and they fabricated the dual tailpipes and the two hanger brackets for the pipes. The bracket that gets welded to the side of the input end of the muffler was off the shelf. The muffler doesn't come with that bracket already attached for some reason. The muffler is the original aftermarket muffler produced in the USA. It's the *Silver Knight* brand, part number 1221 made of aluminumized steel. I've included a shot of the end-flap which shows the dimensions. It's just a bit different in height and width from the original and about 2.5 inches shorter lengthwise. I've checked the output sound in a side by side comparison (the OEM muffler on my '90 Reatta to the aftermarket muffler #1221 on my '89 Reatta) and I can honestly say that they are comparable in tonal quality. They’re almost indistinguishable from one another. This muffler replaces the (what I believe to be) Walker muffler I installed about four years ago. I'm not exactly sure because I can't find the receipt for it but I believe it to be the one recommended on this Forum. I’ve attached pics of that installation.

I'm also including shots of the muffler after installation on my '89 by a local muffler shop as well as shots of the original factory installed muffler on my '90 for comparison. The installer felt that I was being a bit picky regarding the installation considering the age and condition of the car but I told him he was practicing for the eventual install on my '90 and, if things went well, a recommendation to others to have their exhaust work performed at his shop. So, if you live around the Valparaiso, IN. area, please check out Curt at Automotive Exhaust Specialists. They have everything needed to get the job done. Even though the exhaust pipes from the cat. on back are still available as aftermarket, they have the "bend cards" and the equipment so they formed the pipes in-house. They could have also bent the dual tailpipes but I didn't know it before getting them done at Waldron's. I had the choice of using clamps or welding the pipes on. I'll probably be sorry I had them welded as the pipes are aluminized steel as opposed to stainless and it’s been my experience that it is typical that the welds are where the rust out starts to occur. I'll go Stainless on my '90 when it gets replaced.

Back to the mufflers from Waldron's.

I just got word from them that they have access to just three more of these mufflers. They get them from another supplier and it takes about a week to have them delivered. As mentioned earlier, Waldron's has three of these mufflers still available. Once these three are gone, they’re gone but, they can have these mufflers fabricated to their specifications. Presently, I don't know what the cost per muffler is to have them made but, I'll try to find out. (In the mean time, if you want one now, with only three left, better act fast.) They said they can make these mufflers in either stainless or aluminized steel. Of course the stainless would cost more (about 2x more) but would last longer. If I were to go with the stainless on the muffler, then I'd certainly go with stainless on the pipes.

Be advised, according to Curt at Automotive Exhaust Specialists, the aftermarket exhaust pipes on the market are aluminized steel. Aftermarket stainless pipes are unavailable. They would have to be made. I didn't get a quote on those from him but I can if requested.

I now see that the Tailpipes are lower than I think they should be on both cars. I didn't notice this when I took pics of my '90 to show the install guys at AES. They patterned the pipe geometry of the '90 on the '89. They did as I asked and for that I'm greatful. But, I need to pay more attention next time.

I am just researching who might make a product that does not have a recognizable name. I suspect AP makes the same design under another name and it may cost more or less. It is not uncommon for a brand to make the same product under several names. I am not saying it is better or worse than another brand, I just wondered who owned the Silver knight name for mufflers. this is not a big deal so lets not make it one.

I have a friend that is addicted to brake fluid, however he says he can STOP anytime.

No big deal here. I just wanted to know where you're coming from.

It took me weeks to gather the necessary information, all day yesterday to compose/type the text portion of this post and the better part of today to post it with photos that had descriptive text properly aligned. I'm just trying to relay my recent experience with this product and supplier of which I’m extremely satisfied.

The topic of replacement mufflers comes up quite often on this Forum and I feel that this is the closest anyone has come up with as replacement that is comparable with the OEM unit that came with the car from the factory. Putting Camaro, Corvette and other such mufflers on wasn't getting it for me.

I know of which I speak because, as the included photos show, I'd been there/done that.

I too found that information regarding AP EXHAUST TECHNOLOGIES, INC. during my recent search but, as you'll notice, the most current date for that info is as follows:

Find out who, what, where and if these or similar mufflers are made and where they can be had and how much they cost. Then, post the info for all.

I'll leave that to someone else to do as I feel that I've contributed enough time, energy and money on this topic for the time being.

In the meantime I'll continue my search for more of these mufflers as I feel they are the most authentic replacement unit available.
