my 66 will idle however when put in gear car does not have the smooth power it has at idle position what my first step in finding whats wrong with it.

That's pretty generalized but check tune-up specs, spark plug gap, dwell angle and timing. Also check for vacuum leaks around carb base or vacuum taps on the engine.

If you're describing sluggish takeoff from a stop, these cars have what is known as a "Switch-Pitch" transmission. The blade angle in the torque converter changes according to throttle opening and if the blades are stuck in wrong position at idle the car will be very sluggish taking off from a stop.
