door alignment issue?

Both doors on our 55 stick out like 1/4 or so of an inch when closed at the rear. It seems the striker plate wont hold them in.

The guy that sold us the car said it is a known issue on tbirds and even if adjusted they will be out again in a couple of months. He mentioned the door rubbers and said they are the culprit as they dont compress and cause the striker to move outward.

No idea on whether this is a) true or B) a line from someone selling a car.

Is there a fix for this other than slackening off the striker plates and adjusting them into the car a little? And, if I do this do they tend to drift back out again?

Depending on the weather stripping that was used it will require some trimming to ensure a good fit. The ones on my car were OEM (Ford NOS) ones and required trimming in several places for the doors to fit properly. If you go to the following website:

www.classictbird.com, click on newsletter archives, and then check out newsletters 1 and 2. There are instructions in there about how to do the job. Contrary to what the seller said, it is possible to get a good fit on the doors. It just takes time and a good razor to trim in the the right places.

Regards,

Lew

Had to perform a couple of tasks on the car this weekend and had a quick l;ook at the striker plates. They were VERY loose, as in only hand tight.

Got a large phillips screwdriver and hey presto, flush doors. Haven't a clue why they were so loose!

Try a good body shop - sometimes they can just "tweak" it back into position with a block of wood without loosening it up.

Thanks Paul
