1923 Model 45 Wheel wobble

Hi again,

Now that we have driven the Buick, we noticed that one rear tyre/rim is running slightly out of true.

Can anyone advise us how to make the detachable rim/tyre run true.

Also, is there a torque setting for the nuts securing the wedges to the rims? If not, how do you know when they are tight enough?

Thanks in advance.

Rog2,

The split detachable rims often do not run true primarily because worn lug bolts are the only centering device. The original lug wrenches are only 14" - 16" long and effectively limit the torque a normal person can put on the fine threads of the lug bolts. I have almost a dozen stripped lug bolts in my collection from previous owners who over-torqued the lug nuts.

I found the best way to mount the rim & tire is to tighten the nuts in a cross pattern until the wedges are firmly against the fellow. Then spin the wheel against an indicator while gradually tightening the appropriate lug nuts until the tire runs true. You may need to shim one or two lug bolts to pull the rim into place.
