Guest Bob Call
Originally your Powerglide used Type A trans fluid (Type F was for Fordomatic) made with whale oil. You know that the US banned the importation and use of whale oil years ago. So, the replacement for Type A was Dexron, Dexron was improved as Dexron II then as Dexron Mercon III. In 2005 or 2006 GM stopped licensing of Dexron II and replaced Dexron III with Dexron VI. You can use Dexron Mercon III or Dexron VI in your Powerglide. Dexron VI is synthetic so if you are draining and flushing your Powerglide use Dexron VI for the refill. You see Dexron II and III on Amazon and other online seller sites. As these are no longer licensed by GM there is no guarantee that they meet GM specs for your trans.
