Gas Tank I. D.

Can anybody help with what this gas tank fits? There is a GM part number tag attached has the number 297594, there is a chance that first number is actually a 3 which would make sense as all the GM part numbers I have ever seen seemed to start with a three. I have more pictures if I can ever figure out how to had them to this post.

Are you sure there isn't another number in the sequence? the 419920 number is for a backpressure transducer valve for a 1975 Olds Toronado. Maybe there is another number at the end?

What about the number stenciled on the tank you mentioned? That's a master number on the parts tag and I have never seen any books to ID parts from the master numbers. I assume they must exist but I haven't found any on the last 5 years.

I have two tanks that purchased and used the wrong description for the tank that I have pictured. I never thought it would be a problem identifying these with the tags still on them but it looks like I am wrong. I will post a thread for the other tank later on tonight.

First rule of thumb in identifying old parts especially NOS parts. Anything that seems it will be easy because it has a number always turns out to be the part that ends up in the pile of parts that seem to haunt you forever. I have a box of Chrome parts next to my table, all NOS and have never been able to ID them. Even posting here. That's with having a very large parts book library at my disposal for the three major manufactures and even many of the independents that I've already exhausted.

Could that tag just be for the filler neck?

The filler neck is soldered to the tank itself so I don't think that the neck was available separately as it was on my 1950 Chevy. The guy who originally owned this tank was storing up parts for the old cars that he planned to restore, one of which was a 1965 Chevy. I think that it may be for that year, I have to find a 1965 owner now to verify that.

Fleek, I can't thank you enough for helping me out with identifying this tank. The picture that you posted looks exactly like the tank that I have, the small vent tube is visible just to the left of the filler neck in this view and I can see that the filler neck is not centered in the tank, it is offset to the left in this view just like the one that I have.

Fleek, could you tell me where you found this picture on the Internet? The picture is the same as my tank but when I search on ebay for 1965 Chevy gas tanks they show it with the vent tube coming out the back to the left of the opening for the float assembly. If you look at ebay motors auction #261430420201 it show a picture of what I am referring to.

OOPS! I just googled 65 chevy gas tank after you said there may be a connection and that one popped up. I tried it again and found a reference to a 60 chevy. Neither Google or E Bay are accurate every time so some more search would be needed. Also chevelles, novas, etc used ddifferent tanks. Here is a pic that identifies it as a 60 chevy.
