Hi all,

There seems to be a real lack of Hupmobile photos on the internet so I am going to start a thread for the "W" cars. Please add your own photos so we can build a resource for future people who want to restore their cars or for those who want to know what they looked like.

Hi Larry,

I haven't received the car yet so I am just going to assume it is a smaller Ford engine. The plan is to see if it can run or not but I won't spend a lot of money on the engine. I have located a 90 horse Hupmobile engine that should fit and I think I'd like to put that in. If that doesn't pan out I can go other routes... I think I can overcome the top speed issue of these cars by putting on really tall tires so there shouldn't be any need for more than 90 HP.

Cheers, Steve

Steve,

not wanting to hijack your thread, but maybe we can help each other. My Dad's Dad had a Hupp that my Dad thinks was a 1934. He cannot recall the model. I have the following three pictures, which to me look like they could be one of your random shots or one of the brochure pics. What do you think? Here you have a front, side and rear of the car. That's my Dad with the camera. He was born in 1930, so I'm thinking this was taken around '39 or '40. Could this be a 1934 417W?

Thanks,

Anne

Hi Anne,

I do not know these cars well enough to say what it is. I think you should post your photos in a general discussion area and have the experts from all makes and models decide. I've also heard of a book that has all of the old American cars in it, that may be another option.

Jerry,

Thank you for the lead, I have sent you an email. Many of the photos I find seem to be the wrong models.

Here is another rig that was for sale a couple months ago, I am not sure what the price was. I used a cached version of the website and the photos weren't great but better than nothing.

Great Pictures! Started me wondering...it appears from the pictures that the front and rear bumpers and spare tire cover from 418's and 518's might be able to fit my 35 527T...so I'm expanding my search to obtain bumpers from anyone who has same from a 418 or 518. Production volume in those years might provide a better source for parts. Anyone have these parts for sale, or can anyone suggest whom I might contact? Thanks, Steve

What a weekend, I drove the I-81 from the border all the way down to North Carolina and back to pick up the car. That was about 2400 miles in total and my 25 year old van did a great job! I must say the u-haul tandem axle car carriers are good to tow albeit heavy, they do not push the tow vehicle around at all.

Here are a few photos:

The deal with the wife is that I don't touch the car until I finish a few other jobs so it is going to sit until next summer. I am going to chase down some parts in the mean time and do some planning but that will be it. :( A quick look shows that the car appears to be very close to complete aside for the running boards but will need a fair amount of welding. The V8 is full of water so it is toast...will need to get back to thinking about what to do there.

Cheers, Steve

Found an interesting document on the HAMB the other day. The numbers of cars known to exist seem to match up with the register but the rest is hard to read so I'll see if I can dig this document up elsewhere. Mine is W5810 should anybody be keeping a running list. It turns out there is a 2nd number plate on the inner side of the frame below the drivers seat.

No problem Jerry, I'm having fun trying to tally up all of the cars out there. The funny thing is that I've only found one right hand drive car so far and I am led to believe their are about 9 of them between New Zealand and Australia.

Here is one that is for sale in Southern Ontario but it's big money. The caption is wrong, it's actually a 1934.

I pulled the front clip off of the car today. Progress won't really start on the car until the spring but I needed to get the grille shell off and the front clip was basically just sitting in place so I took it off too.

The main plan is to get all of the chrome parts off the car and get them fixed over the winter. The neighbour spotted me and told me he has an engine hoist so I am going to pop the engine out sometime in the next week or so.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the support. The engine is now sitting loose on the mounts and ready to pop out when I get my hands on the lift. Working on this car is quite enjoyable except for the flat head screws. They meet their fate with the grinder but everything else has been easy to work on.

Here are the photos of your car you've provided to me:

I hope to be able to get somewhere near that stage by the end of next summer! It's a great inspiration.

Thank for posting my photos Steve, 4 years of work on my 1934 Hup, from the frame and the total 1/3 of the bottom sheet metal changed all around the total car, new sub frame, floors, fenders, to much to list. it was in real bad shape, but now going on 5 years of constant work its almost done!! thank God, it looks like a few more months of final metal work and then to the body shop. I could use a front bumper now, also some small parts, if anybody knows of any parts please give me a call, thanks again jerry 732-241-7212

G,day Steve. First up subscribe to Australian and New Zealand Hupmobile Register. You will be pleased that you did. Next put your recent purchase away as a parts supply and buy a restored example that you can drive now. A usable vehicle is going to cost less than you are going to spend on the bitsa. Hi Max,

I have obtained a few back issues from Duncan. The Register is quite good and I may join up in the future but the US Club suits my needs for now.

I had thought about buying a nicer model when I was looking for a car and decided that this was the way to go. If I bought a restored car its condition could only get worse with time but with this car...hopefully not! :D I look forward to learning how to weld this summer and think the restoration will be a pleasant experience plus I'll be saving a car.

Cheers, Steve
