Steering box refurbishment

My 27-30 Pontiacs have the split nut style steering boxes, several of which are quite worn. If they are adjusted to have minimal freeplay in the straight ahead position then they bind on turns. If adjusted to be good on turns then there is a lot of freeplay in the middle.

Has anyone had success having these types of boxes rebuilt? Is there any tricks for them.

I pressed the worm off the shaft and reversed it, that helped a lot as it got rid of some slop but not all??
