Max brake drum I.d.

Looking at what I think are 1939 rear brake drums. I can't find any specs. as to the maximum I.d. of the drums. These look to be about 12-5/16". Can anyone tell me what the maximum I.d. of the drum is. Thanks.

Those drums started life at 12" I.D. The normal, accepted limit on turning them is .060" so if your 12-5/16" dimension is correct you are well past the "safe" limit.

Thanks for the bad news. I was afraid of that when I was looking at them. They just didn't look right. I also noticed the adjusters were screwed out more than any brake setup I've ever worked on. Now the hunt is on for new drums.

I have had no luck with basic machine turn drum...my fronts also looked bad ..rough tearing cut even with new bit...I used 'em. This one is scrap

unless I buy a new replacement and reuse old hub.. I dont understand issue..drums were clean..I thought a quick light cut to true it up..

65Starfire, I checked your suggestion but don't think it will work. My car came with what they call "wide 5's. I will be at the car shortly and will measure bolt pattern.

WIDE 5 IS THE EARLIER FORD DRUM...AND IS ALSO AVAILABLE

The wide 5's measure 5 on 10". Have looked at Drakes, Mac's Auto supply, Joe's Ford Parts with no luck. Mssr. Bwatoe, can you help with a supplier? Thanks.

I have found out that these drums are 1936 to early 1938. Sorry for my mistake.
