Book about fluid and converter drive- good read!

Recommended Posts

Fluid Torque Drive was an unusual trans Chrysler offered as an option in 1951 - 53. It had the 4 speed M6 transmission along with a torque converter instead of fluid drive.

The only difference is, a torque converter actually multiplies torque like a gear ratio, usually 2.6:1 at stall.

Every other car at the time, offered a torque converter with 2 speed trans (Powerglide, Ultramatic, Dynaflow) or a fluid coupling with 4 speeds (Hydramatic, Fluid Drive).

I had 52 New Yorker with Fluid Torque Drive and would it burn rubber in Low range. Quite startling the way that big barge would take off if you did a brake torque.

It was also the best trailer towing transmission. Imagine a 4 speed with an extra 2.6:1 gear reduction on low, coupled to the most powerful Hemi V8 made at that time.
