1936 Chrysler C7 Airstream Roadster

Recommended Posts

I figured I would throw this on just in case any members are interested. I've decided to put my 1936 Chrysler Roadster up for sale. Here is a copy and paste from a local Craigslist ad I started running

I've decided to possibly part with my 1936 Chrysler C7 Airstream roadster. Super nice body with mint rust free floors.

She's an excellent driver as is with a totally rebuilt engine including new pistons and rings, rod Bearings, complete valve job, New timing chain and gears, Water Pump, Fuel Pump, Sisson Automatic Choke, Complete tuneup including, cap, Rotor, Wires, Complete breaker plate, Cooling system rebuild with all new hoses and Belt.

Everything that could be removed from the engine was, All parts were sandblasted and correctly refinished.

Complete new stainless steel exhaust system.

Complete brake job from the spindles out with all parts, blasted and refinished. All new Shoes, rebuilt wheel cylinders and master all refinished in correct cast gray colors with Silicone fluid to prevent corrosion.

All new wide white walls and tubes on blasted and repainted wheels.

New Trim Rings,

All interior panels removed and all properly woodgrained. A several step process with multiple finishes that duplicate the original woodgraining. Extremely labor intensive but spectacular when done.

All instruments removed cleaned and or replaced as necessary. All gauges work properly as well as all lights.

Steering wheel upgraded to a deluxe 1939 Banjo wheel from a 1939 Chrysler.

All new floor mats and pedals.

New Glove boxes.

Sill plates removed and re polished. These aren't available any wheres. Unique to 1936 Chrysler roadsters.

All dash lights work as do exterior lights. Freshly re chromed front bumper, Nice older rechromed rear bumper and all guards. NOS Horn Covers. Drives excellent. Doesn't overheat in heavy traffic even Idling for nearly a half hour on an 80 degree day. Many new rubber exterior Grommets and pads, Repolished side window frames with new Glass. Tons of small stuff done as well that I'm forgetting at the moment.

Overall a very presentable car but could use a paint job it's chipped and flaking a little in some spots. The only rust ever in the car is the bottom of the tail pan. Not the floors just the outer skin at the bottom. No patch panels or filler ever anywheres else on the car. It was repainted in 1966.

Also needs the top refinished. I do have the full mechanism and all hardware including rear window. Looks great without it so I didn't get around to refinishing it as I never drive it in the rain or leave it outside. Doors and windows work really smooth. Doors are completely rustfree as is the rumble lid, Rumble compartment. I've had everything apart and looked inside every panel.

You won't find a nicer 36 Chrysler to finish off.

I do have a full set of correct 1936 Chrysler hubcaps in fair to good condition that go with it as well as some other small stuff.

The Chassis has been cleaned and painted to the firewall as you can see. The rest will finish nicely. Nothing is badly pitted.

If you want something different this is rarer than the majority of cars out there.

Total production of 6 cylinder cars is less than 450 with an additional less than 350 8 cylinder cars for a total production under 800. I've only found less than 10 of both combined since I've owned this left. 2 hot rods and one complete pile of rust in pieces needing the bottom 6 inches of the car replaced. There hasn't been one for sale in Hemmings in atleast 3 Years.

Asking $40,000. When will you get the chance to buy another especially as mechanically sorted as this car is?

I may consider trades but since I'm really selling it to buy a bigger house I would really have to want the trade and convince the wife it's a good idea!

Nice Chrysler Airstream. I didn't know it was possible to get a Roadster in '36!

Chrysler called it a roadster, although it really was just a convertible with conventional roll up windows. Although the top does disconnect quickly with just 2 bolts. I guess it follows the same thinking GM used later with calling the Corvettes roadsters even after 55 when they put conventional windows in them.

Roadster sounds sporty so I'll use it.

No takers yet. It might seem like alot but find another in better shape with fresh mechanics so you can drive it now not in a couple of years. Have a little fun with it now, then finish restoring it in the the future.

The wife wants a bigger house so I have to reluctantly empty the garage.

Here are some more photos. I dug out the caps, top frame, Original steering wheel and Horn button, rear window, Original top boot, as well as the top hold down bracket assemblies for the top I had cast to replace the missing ones. As well as the skirts which have really nice chrome on them. The car may be headed to Ebay this weekend. The wife is getting anxious to put money down on our new house.

The header bow is missing for the top. (it was wood so that can be relatively easily reproduced) I did check the numbers for top parts in my 1936 Mopar master catalog and it appears all 1936 Dodge Chrysler Plymouth and Desoto convertible coupes, used the same hardware. Several numbers for brackets and bows were the same so any missing parts should be too hard to come up with even if only for a pattern. The top folds well. Nothing seems terribly worn and nothing is seized.

Ebayers didn't see the value in the car so back to the top on here. I didn't think it was an ebay type of car. Yeah if you put 30,000 in it you will have a very nice number 2 maybe better car that actually runs and drives like one. You will then still have under 70,000 in it. If the car in number 2 condition plus isn't worth 70 I would be really surprised. How many other cars could you buy and get your entire investment out of when you sell it? I can point out thousands for sale that you won't. Trades considered at this point but even trades need to have the same value. Partial trades welcome as well.

Wow I think I have been on craigslist to long. Sorry about that.

Fair trades and offers considered.

Nice looking car. I wish you the best of luck with your sale. As a possible point of reference, I sold a '36 Airstream coupe on ebay last year for $32,000. I probably sold it too cheap, but that is about what I had in it. I bought it a few years ago at auction, and with buyers fees the total was $31280. I bought it like you see it. The car went to England. It had been in the same family in Florida for many years and had been painted once with a very high quality job, and the interior had never been restored. I miss this car, but only have finances/room for one toy at a time, and right now have the 31 Cadillac.

Your car is likely worth more being a convertible, although the coupes aren't everywhere either. I think having hubcaps on the car in the selling pics would enhance it even more. Again, all the best.

Thanks for the info. I figured it was priced about right. I would have to think a convertible would have to be worth another 50 percent or more so I think I'm in the ball park. I never put the caps on because I was looking for a mint set. I have since discovered they are pretty much impossible to find and the ones I have, would be considered a good set.
