Anybody else getting odd emails again?

Three times this week I have received odd emails from two fellow Reatta club members........I did check out the first one, now I have them blocked.

If I remember correctly, three years ago or so we were getting emails from a fellow member at 3:00 am, so I knew those were fake. I blocked them, too.

I received a suspicious one. It was addressed to me and supposedly came from me. I deleted it without opening it.

Don't know what's worse, talking to yourself, or not listening to what you had to say.

I am one of the guys that got "hacked". I have cleaned my files, deleted my contact list, deleted my "old" mail, "sent" mail and "recently deleted" mail. I also changed my password.

My son in law who is I.T. checked my computer out and said everything that should have been done, was.

I am sorry for any inconvienance and will advise anyone getting an email from me that if it isn't specific to you to erase it.

I am unfamiliar with the AV listed above but I have MWB installed.

My Son who worked as a tech for a technology chain some time ago, swears by it.

I also have Kaspersky AV installed and occasionally run Threatfire.

I believe MWB and TF both still have free versions available.

You never know what site will try to infect your computer.

I was once looking for a recipe for a roast when BAM!, all manner of warning boxes started popping up.

Also, it's a good idea to stay away from the "free" porn sites. Don't ask me how I know. :)

As a tip for those who might be reading this... MalwareBytes is a great program, I have been using it for years, but a good anti-virus program is also needed to protect your computer. Anti-virus programs must be setup to scan all emails or you will not be protected. I use the free version of Avast anti-virus.

Just a word of caution. Never have two anti-virus programs installed and active at the same time. It can severely slow down your computer. Make sure you have completely uninstalled one anti-virus program before installing another. Some anti-virus programs sometimes need a special program, that can be downloaded from the vendors website, to completely remove the anti-virus program if it has crashed or another anti-virus program has been installed while it is still active.

Even before 'antivirus' software is installed, the very first thing one should always do is set up a user account with NO Administrator privileges. Do basically all your work, web surfing, etc from the restricted user name. This is standard operating procedure in all corporate networks. But many home users are either unaware, or do not want to bother taking the time to do it.

Then there are those of us who just use linux instead...

To all:

This afternoon we heard that YAHOO email accounts worldwide had been hacked. That was on WBBM news in Chicago, IL on their 2:00 pm news. At least one of the odd emails I received had a Yahoo address.

The story said stuff had gone viral, but not in a good way.

Just an update to my earlier post regarding the use of an Anti Virus and MalwareBytes on my computer.

I was recently "forced" to upgrade to the latest version of MalwareBytes.

This new version is of the type that runs continuously in the background instead of on demand as the previouse version did.

This new version conflicts with my Kaspersky PURE 3.0 AV. Unless I can find a patch or fix to this conflict, I'll probably uninstall MWB.

Just saying.

Interesting. I think you should be a little concerned about being forced to buy the paid version. The Free version is still available for download on their website. I have never used the paid version. Does it have anti-virus built in that runs in the background? If so, perhaps the reason it conflicts with Kaspershy is as I stated before, you never want two anti-virus programs running (or installed) at the same time.

As a test I just ran MWB and did a scan. It updated the virus database as usual before it started but no mention was made about upgrading the program to the Paid version.

Dave is not the only one. It happens to lots of folks.

Because I sell Reatta parts I am in lots of peoples address books and at least three to four times a week I will get bogus emails from someone I know. If there is simply a link I always delete it without clicking on the link. A few weeks ago I started getting these emails with the link and also a very short message saying it was OK to look at the link but the message also simply does not look quite right so again I delete the email.

I was mentioning this to a friend here in town who had someone invade his address book and he said the link looked so interesting he clicked on it anyway. I was sort of sympathetic but was thinking myself------------------stupid.

The best advice is never open a link if you are not POSITIVE it is OK

I am however currently working with a very nice fellow from Nigeria who is going to include me in his family fortune if I help him get it out of his country.

I just got spam from a Amazon. It had 14 links so I figured it was spam and deleted it.

I am no longer getting undeliverable mail. I changed my password and my security questions as well as used malware to clean everything up.

Ron,

My wife says I'm "too wordy", that I need to reduce the word count because I will loose the interest of the person who's attention I'm trying to keep.

When I do this, all the pertinent info doesn't get out there and I end up having to back track and explain the situation or my position further.

This is a case in point.

The version of MWB I have is the paid "PRO" version. I was recently given the option of upgrading to the latest and greatest version or going back to the free version. Why would I want t go back to the free version with limited functionality when I'd already forked over hard earned cash for the full blown "PRO" version? Besides... newer is better, right? I had no conflicts or other issues with the original paid PRO version installed on my laptop but I can't go back to it.

This is what I meant by "forced".

I'm guessing that with the trouble in the Ukraine (homeland of my ancestors) it stands to reason that there would be conflict between the two programs.

Does it have anti-virus built in that runs in the background?

Not as I understand it.

Me too! Can't wait to be rolling in the dough!

I looked into taking advantage of his offer too. My wife decided it would put us in a higher tax bracket. She didn't want that so I turned him down.

Makes sense now John. I was afraid that you had picked up a malware spoof of the MWB software telling you had to buy something.

Not to hijack the thread, but in a similar vein, most everyone should now be aware the is a security issue with Internet Explorer and it should not be used until a fix is released. At least there are a lot of good, if not better, browsers out there. Hope everyone is using one.

The first email I received included a link to some kind of a Ophra product/service, yet it was supposedly from one of you. I did not open it.
