I was trying to go by the cowl, since the R is a flat piece of wood and the S is more of a curved piece of metal. I agree, this is not a great picture, but I think it is a flat vertical piece of wood...

This car is a Ford Model S. The Model S had running boards and the Model R did not. See photos.

OK, now I am confused. I thought that it was the Model N that did not have runningboards, but the R and the S both did...
