How can you tell that this is a Model R and not a Model S?

What are the telltale details?

I think the Model S had splash aprons and the R did not. Otherwise, from the photo, it's hard to see the subtle differences...

I was trying to go by the cowl, since the R is a flat piece of wood and the S is more of a curved piece of metal. I agree, this is not a great picture, but I think it is a flat vertical piece of wood...

OK, now I am confused. I thought that it was the Model N that did not have runningboards, but the R and the S both did...

By the look of that dash mounted spotlight, I am guessing this is someone who had to do alot of driving at night.
