Watch a complete frame off video series on a 54 Buick

Here's a pretty good video series on some nice Rebs taking a 1954 Buick down to the frame and then back again with all the needed crap in between. Hard detailed work. Good metal working craftsmanship so this is a good watch.

Heres the first link then follow it from there:

Question: Would there be any thing "You" would do differently? Hope he is doing this on T & M and not on a bid basis.

It appears for his metal / rust prep he is using in Video 5 perhaps the PPG product DX 520 which is a phosphoric acid based product. If only using a phosphoric acid and never ever touching and using a Cl- ion based acid such as mercuric acid then neutralizing is not necessary. There are no Cl- ions in phosphoric acid and it is the lone Cl- ion remnants when using mercuric acid or any cl- based acid which attracts the hydrogen and oxygen molecules which begins the rusting process. This is true even if you use chlorinated tap water.

When using phosphoric acid as a converter and sealer after chemically stripping the paint off however, first wash the surface with a good surfactant detergent wash, then follow with a baking soda solution wash, then with a distilled water wash not using tap or well water. Then apply the pure phosphoric acid wash to the newly cleaned and neutralized metal. Let dry. The surface will dry and provide a protective coating on the metal surface via the phosphoric acid residue. You can then paint directly over the residue after a light brillo pad go over to knock down any buildup and drip lines if any.

This Roadmaster belongs to a forum member here who posts more frequently on the 54 Buick Highway. She and the owner of the shop Mark Seybold just came down from TN and picked up a solid 72R body as well as a very nice door from me for use with this project. Regrettably is was a little late for some of the body panels he had already spent a lot of time on fabricating. I agree he is doing an awesome off frame job on this car. I am sure there are things some will see they would do different but with probably no different end result.

Thanks for posting and also the "tutorial" on the phosphoric acid.

Yes we agree. Top notch results and attention to details is the key. By the 5th video you can hear it in his voice he is a little burned out on the metal fab as it just keeps coming at him especially around the dreaded trunk and rear transom areas.

Ambitious project. Can't be too many A/C'd 54 Roady's left. Looking forward to seeing the completed car.

You just gotta love the way these guys talk about the car like it's a sick relative getting better in the hospital! Really like the way they work.

Anyone know the backstory on this car?
