Beltfed
Working in the rear end area. Seems everything is worn out. Looking at the knee action shocks...the long arm on the center hub moved about 60 degrees with no resistance on both. Check oil level and it was ok with the smelliest oil ever. Plus the center shaft has slide play in both. Where does one send Zephyr shocks for repair? Checked around different sites and it looks like they are not cheap to repair. This brings me another question. Has anyone replaced these knee action jobs with modern tube shocks? If you have can you share where you got the kit or do a home build? ply33
Probably should not poke my nose into the Lincoln and Zephyr forum but. . . "Knee Action" was Chevrolet's term for its independent front suspension.I suspect that you are describing and asking questions about lever arm shocks. I don't know of kits but there are a number of rebuilding services. I had the ones on my '33 Plymouth redone decades ago by Five Points. Here are the two vendors I know of, probably others will chime in with more choices.Apple Hydraulics, Inc. 1610 Middle Road Calverton, NY 11933 Telephone: +1.800.882.7753 Fax: +1.631.369.9516 email: info@applehydraulics.comhttp://www.applehydraulics.comFive Points Classic Auto Shocks 2911 S. Beltfed
Thanks for the input on vendors. Thanks also for correcting my verbiage. I hang out on the "Stovebolt" forum using the same call sign. Old Chevys were my passion until I meet my new girl, the '38 Zephyr coupe. With those classic curves she should have been 'nose art' on a B-17 over Germany, no ME-109 would have dared to shoot at her. I guess old habits die hard. Lever action shocks it is! larry butcher
Beltfed, I had the 2 rear shocks on my '38 rebuilt a couple years ago by Bill Wzorek . He's located in Massachusetts and his # is 1-413-586-5324. Good guy to deal with. Good Luck
abelincoln
If you wish to give up and find some less expensive tube shocks, a Ford kit should work. You'll need to bolt or weld a bracket to the frame for an upper attachment point. Google or try Speedway motors or other aftermarket sources, maybe Honest Charley?Abe
