Guest buickhenry
My 53 Skylark is surging at speeds under 40mph, but runs fine at over 40mph. The other problem is that it only gets from 11 to 12.6 mpg. I am tired of the ethanol problem and have thought about a throttle body fuel injection set-up. Is there anybody out there that is using one on a nailhead and how is it working out? buickhenry
5219
Dynaflow was a very inefficient transmission. I doubt that the car ever got much better mileage than that.
Aaron65
Usually a surge is a result of a lean fuel mixture, and in the case of under 40, I'd think it was partially lean on the idle circuit and transition circuit. Have you cleaned the carburetor/rebuilt it? Is there an inline filter that may be clogged? Does it run well at wide open throttle? Is the electrical system in good condition? Even with ethanol, you will be able to tune the car to run satisfactorily.
Guest jbrd403
Have you checked to see if the timing is hunting at the rpm you are running at 40? you may have a distributor or timing chain issue. Buicks seemed to like to spread the chain out at more of a cruise speed and would advance and retard the camshaft with rpm changes.
