Collecting early auto accessory catalogs

Recommended Posts

I got excited the other day wen I saw the post advertising accessory catalogs for sale. Although it seems sometimes like this forum has degenerated into a "for sale" column, there is often some good discussion about items appearing here, and that's not bad. I guess there are two kinds of collectors of auto accessory catalogs - those who need the parts info, and those like myself that find them fascinating pieces of history. The early ones are full of great illustrations and info about gadgets and gizmos designed to improve the car or the driving experience. It helps me to identify and date some of the things in my collections, and besides that, the artwork is often amazing. Here are a few examples from my own collection of them. Does anyone else out there collect? Let's see some examples-

Terry, you must have a broad collection! I've read some of

your collecting columns in your region's newsletter.

Yes, old printed information is great for pointing out forgotten

features which today's historians have entirely missed.

I've seen ads for RED sidewall tires in the 'Teens; and NARROW whitewalls in

the 'Twenties.

I doubt that 1% of knowledgeable collectors know about such tires.

Though made by mainstream companies and probably well-known to

people who lived at the time, they are never seen at modern-day shows;

no one reproduces them.

If it wasn't for literature being preserved, they would be lost to history.

As a newer member of this forum I was not sure if this memorbilia section was intended as the designated place to sell items like you show above or just discuss these items. It seems the Buy/Sell section gets more attention if you are looking to sell these items so that's where I have put my stuff. I do enjoy looking here to see what is posted. Nice catalog collection!

Terry Bond or anyone else on here for that matter:

As a collector of Crosley Automobiles and of all things Crosley, i would particularly interested in finding any catalog or advertising from Americo, The American Automobile Accessories Co., of Cncinnatti, Ohio. The company was owned by Powel Crosley and was part of the launch of his automotive career . I would be interested in buying, copying , buying copies etc. of said catalogues.
