ralphnof49
I see on Fifth Avenue Antique Auto parts website that because of brass parts in the Briggs Warner overdrive that gear oil more than GL-1 is not recommended and neither is synthetic. Would this apply to all years or only early years? Our car is a 1947.
Michael L.
Hi Ralph:I have a '41 with Borg Warner overdrive and the manual recommends GL-1 gear oil. I tried about a million places in Saskatoon and couldn't find GL-1 so I had to get a friend to bring me back a case from NAPA in Palm Springs.Mike L. peecher
Regular gear oil works just fine in both the OD and transmission. To my knowledge there are no brass components in the OD. There is no "separation" between the OD and the transmission so use the same oil for both. The GL-4 (Stalube) I use is non corrosive to copper and bronze components. ralphnof49
Thanks for the replies. I thought there might be bronze bushings, but glad to hear that GL-4 would not be damaging. Perhaps the GL-1 recommendation was made when it was the best on the market.
