Anyone Ever Put Front Or Rear Wheel Seals in a 1916-17 Maxwell?

Has anyone ever put front or rear wheel seals in a 1916-17 Maxwell? I have the new felt inner seals but can't figure what holds these seals in. It appears as if there is only about 1/8 of an inch of the sheet metal housing holding the seal to the hub??? This seems doomed to fall off soon after assembly. Anyone??

Since I don't have a manual I think it might help to post some photos detailing what you have and what was in place when you started. I have some older general auto books and maybe there is some similar reference I could find.

I finally gave up trying to figure out how to make such a poorly designed seal work and decided to modernize it . I took everything to a machinist and he is going to make flanges that screw to the hub and have modern press in seals. It will end up costing me only slightly less than a complete differential swap would have but at least I won't have to worry about grease getting all over my new brake bands and wheels. Howard Dennis
