Hello everybody!

I live in Buenos Aires and I found the car in Mendoza Province this city is 650 milles away from home. As soon as the previous owner finish the paperwork and I get a place to work on the project, I bring the car and begin the restoration. I intoduce you my convertible, she's called Mimi. I'll have you updated about the differents works that I carry out.

I hope you'll know to excuse my spelling and syntax. I don't use to write in english. In my job I just read it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy, and why not laugh of my posts.

  • 2 months later...

Hello again my friends!

All this weeks I've been busy because of my job, and the the delivery of my car was delayed until July 5th... Initially, the car should be with me the week before last week .

Well, I'm about to buy an extra engine and gear box for spare. The cylinder head of my engine is missing. Then, I need to know the years that Buick equiped their cars with the same engine (example: 50 series from 1946 until 1950). My question is because the engine I'm about to buy is of a Buick 1950 (I don't know wich series)

Someone knows if the engine was the same if you compare a Super 1947 and a Super 1950?

And if this engine were a 70 series, does it fit on a 1947 Super?

Is there some changes on the mountings or in somwhere else?

I really apreciate yor help.

Thank you!

Nahuel, if MIMI is a Super, the 1950 engine MAY be the same. 1947, Special, series 40 and 1947 super, series 50 both had a 248 ci engine.

1950 Special, series 40 had a 248 ci engine.

1950 Super ,series 50 had a 263 ci engine. Either should change with your engine IF they are for a standard transmission car. The crank shaft in a Dynaflow car was not machined for a pilot bearing. I understand they can be machined to take one. I believe your '47 has the front engine mount beneath the camshaft gear cover. If so, you would need to exchange these covers, as the '50 mounts from the side of the engine'.

Hi,

I'm from Spain.

I'm restoring a 1946 Buick convertible but very slowly. The engine works and I started with the bodywork, but I'm missing parts.

Now I work on electrical issues.

Si que puede ser el primer post en dos lenguas (Yes, If you can be the first post in two languages)

Bye!

Ben, if my engine has the front mount and the other one has lateral mount, can I adapt the lateral mounts (example: just removing them and installing the '47 front mount) of the "new" engine to the engine support of my '47?

Thanks!

I just can't believe it! she's finally arrived at home this afternoon. My father and me went where the truck left the Buick and we pick her up.

a couple of friends, my brother in law, my dad, my father in law and my little nephew (7 years old) came to support and try to put the car into the garage...

I started to classify the different pieces in the different boxes, but too much for today. I attach a few pictures of the car and my workshop. Today is the day zero... Let's see how it begins all this issue!

Nahuel,

Glad it arrived safely, great project.

I love how well the previous owner bagged and tagged all the parts for you so you can tell where they all go :( !!!

Your seven year old nephew may be very helpful if he is good at jigsaw Puzzles.

I look forward to seeing your project progress.

John,

I also noticed the KPH speedo. The MPH is the smaller numbers. I would love to have one of these for my dash that will hang on the wall in the garage!

If you'll zoom in on the speedo, you'll see the smaller numbers are each 10 KPH between the 20 KPh 10 20 30 40 etc.

A simple conversion for KPH to MPH is to multiply by 6 then move the decimal one place to the left. 180 x 6 = 1080; move the decimal over one place to the left = 108.0 and you've got the MPH. The easiest one is 100 KPH, 100 x 6 = 600 => 60.0. (100 KPH is actually 62.13 mph.) When I was in Germany, driving Uncle Sam's cars with MPH speedo's, we knew that if the speed limit was 100 KPH, you could run just a little over 60 MPH and be safe. You did not want the Polizei to catch you speeding in a U.S. tagged vehicle. So much for taking advantage of the areas on the Autobahn where there were no posted speed limits. You stayed in the right hand lane with all the trucks and had fun just trying to identify, if you were quick enough, the other cars that zipped by you.

Thank you all!

Just lilke Ed said the small numbers are the half speed between the big ones.

Here in Argentina, the max speed in a street is 40Km/h. When I was in USA and drove, I remember the max speed in streets is 25 MPH. It´s almost the same.

Matt, wait a while and I'm sure I can get you a speedometer four your wall-mounted dash.

If 100 KPH is 60 MPH, then 40 KPH is roughly 25 MPH too. You'll never get that car out of second gear. Current speed limit in New York State is 65 MPH although almost no one but me dares to do it. Everyone else is going much faster and they get really pissed at those who dare to slow em down. Other States have higher speed limits than us.

Within the last year or so, Kansas upped the speed limit on four-lane divided highways, State and Federal as well as Interstates, to 75 mph. When it was 70 mph everyone was running 80. Now that it's 75, they're doing 85 and, as you said, "really get pissed at those who dare slow them down." Kansas has also put up signs "the left lane is for passing only." Still doesn't keep the a$$holes from driving in the left lane at any speed they choose. Thanks for letting me rant.

Hello everybody! Last day of job... tomorrow is my 1°st day off work until wednesday. I can't wait for the free days to begin to work in the car! I know I'm getting ahead, but I have two questions:

What color is the radio grill?

Plated? Golden? Chromed?

I can't find the VIN plate, but in some places I think I found some of Sherwood Green...

have the convertibles two tone paintings or only single color?

As usual, thanks for the info you can give me.

I finally find out what color is the radio grill. I've disassembled all the chromed front. When I removed the radio grill from the chromed front, behind the horizontal bars was the real pattern... It's black with small horizontal strips in plated. One thing less to learn!

As soon as I take some pictures, I'll post them.

Hello!

The classification of the parts is finished. I hope I can find the parts when I start to looking for them...

Today, I've manufactured a kind of "bench" or "support" for the overhauling of the gear box. I've made it in accordance with a plan I've found in a '48-'49 shop manual. Anyway, I've made some modifications because originally it was iron-made and I've made it in wood... I test it and for the 1st two hours whit the gear box installed on it, it resisted. I hope it lasts.

Tomorrow I'll post some photos to show this "state of the art" support. LOL.

Okay, here we go!

Today's morning and until 2PM I was disassembling the gear box... I need to replace several pieces: a bent selector shaft, synchronizing drums, bearing, etc.

I must check the 3rd gear, sliding gear, counter gear, reverse idler gear also.

I need advise: I couldn't remove the shaft of the reverse idler gear. Only it slides a few millimeters, and it stucks. I don't have access to one end of the shaft, then I can't hit it to take it out... can someone help me?

I attach some photos of the disassembly and of the reverse idle gear.

Guest Straight eight

As I recall the transmission has a pin thru the outside of the case, and this pin is driven further into the case so the shaft is released and now can be driven out.. Strange but true.
