leyther8008
A couple of years ago while I was on holiday on the isle of man I came across this trashed flathead in the sand dunes.Sorry about the arty shots but it was the early days of digital photography and I was experimenting with B&W.I can see that its a 24 bolt flat head but can you gurus tell me what year its likely to be and if the gear lever is correct for a cabover type layout or just bent from the trashing the motors had?Best guess over here is 38-42 and probably a boat engine by the bracketry on the front of the block,Cheers Bern

Dave Mellor NJ
I just had an 8BA boat motor. It had a straight through trans, no shift just engage and go, you don't need to shift gears in the water. It also had marine water cooled exhaust manifols and blanked off water pumps. It should have an "A" on the head if it's 39-

DavidAU
If it is all original the distributer says its a 1939 - 40 Mercury. It also appears to have 99 cast on the front of the block which would confirm that. Edited June 2, 2012 by DavidAU (see edit history)
