Help filling out form...

I am entering my 1957 Buick Roadmaster 75 in a car show in May. Celebration of Automobiles at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the opening weekend of the Indianapolis 500 05/12/2012. I don't want to sound stupid, but the entry form is asking a few questions I am not 100% sure of. I though I would ask here and see if I can confirm my answers or get some help with filling out what I don't know... :rolleyes: Below are the Question and my answers in Red...

Year: 1957

Marque: Buick

Model: Roadmaster 75

Body Style: 4 Door Hardtop

Color: UC Gulf Green over Dover White

Chassis #: BK839 ??

Body Builder: Fisher

Vehicle License Number: I assume this is the license Plate on the car?

Any help would be appreciated...

As an ex gm partsman I would suggest the following

Model 75 (75 tells anyone who is in the industry that it is a Roadmaster)

Body Style 4739SX (same reasoning as above) (all the 40s and 50s are Buicks just as 10s are Chevs, 20s Pontiacs, 30s Olds and 60s Cadillac)and all the 39s were 4 door hardtops at this time)

But then maybe I am just a contrary old guy...maybe you are absolutely correct with our nomenclature and then anyone can read it and know what you have.

Whatever you do enjoy your car, thats what they were made and purchased for.

Thank you for your reply... I do want to make it correct, but I also want it easy for the layman to be able to read... There will be 1000's of people at the 500 that know nothing about Buick's and I want to make it easy for them too (adults and kids alike)... Do you think there would be anything wrong changing the body style to whats below? and did I get the Chassis and Body Builder number right?

The chassis number you need will possibly be on another small plate vertically on the driver's door pillar. If you want to sound more professional, when you pluralise anything please leave out the apostrophes.

Thank you for correcting my grammar. Sometimes spell check does not always catch this old country boys mistakes. And Lord know I'm not a professional. Just someone with a really nice Buick that is trying to share it with others... And I do care about making things correct, otherwise I would not have asked in the first place, but I am new to the site and although I have only owned this Buick for 1.5 years now (after the passing of my father) it has been in my family for 35 years... I guess that was a run-on sentence. LOL

I checked the door panels / supports post and there is no tag on them. Looks like there use to be, but I would assume it was removed when dad had it repainted back in the 90's.

I will just need to leave the Chassis number blank I guess.

Beautiful RM 75 Mike! I'd like to know the interior color, since the it's Gulf Green/Dover White (edit - never mind, I can look it up from the Trim Number on your Data Plate...Duh!). The missing plate has the "VIN" number, though it's not the newer many digit type. The car is probably titled/registered with that number, and probably begins with 7D.......

That's also the ID that tells you the plant where the car was assembled:

7 (=Series 70), D (=1957), the third is the assembly plant;

1 = Flint,

2 = Southgate (CA),

3 = Linden (NJ),

4 = Kansas City,

5 = Wilmington,

6 = Atlanta,

7 = Framingham (MA)

8 = Arlington (TX),

The remaining digits are the sequential build number.

Technically your car is a 4 Door Riviera Hardtop (all Buick 2 & 4-door hardtops of the day were Rivieras), and for the color I'd leave off the "UC." Many shows ask for a VIN or chassis number just for insurance purposes. When you register a car in AACA shows, the VIN is used (the car is then assigned a Vehicle Number) and that vehicle number is used to follow the car's award and show history.

Speaking of history, the RM 75's were intro'd in mid-March, 1957 as an upmarket version of the Series 70 Roadmasters, with interiors that approached Cadillac-quality. They are the ne plus ultra Buick for 1957.

That said, she sure is a beautiful Roadmaster! Hope to see it in a show someday.

The Vin is 7D4037471... Does that tell any tails???

The interior is 100% original, never been touched... There are a couple of bad places on the driver seat that has worn thin and have started to tare, but I hate to fix them seeing how if I do, I can’t say the interior is factory original. I have been told it is better to be a little distressed and be original then to be restored...???

Don't bother looking for a chassis number, just use the VIN on the form. If it's really bothering you, call the Speedway office to clarify that you must use a chassis rather than VIN or serial number. It's just not a big deal.

Your car was assembled in Kansas City ("4" in the list I posted), late in the model year. As for the interior, there's a difference between maintenance and restoration. SMS in Canby, OR, may well have your seat fabric (or another vintage upholstery dealer), and there's nothing wrong with replacing the portion(s) that's frayed. I'd do it in a New York minute because the rest of the interior and the car is so nice.

I did contact SMS for the material, per Kent Auto Upholstery and SMS gave me a price for the leather, vinyl and cloth for the front seat only at $700.00 and Kent wanted $500.00 to install. $1200.00 total, but SMS stated they would not stand behind a match due to fading and they would recommend doing both front and back seats... $2400.00 and at this time I just cant afford that... I just put $1000.00 into the exhaust putting it back to original...

I do love gathering info on the car and I knew the car was purchased from Olson Brothers Pontiac-Buick located in Burlington, Kansas on August 10, 1957, by G.B. Tuley... I have some of the original purchase records. But I did not know it was assembled in Kansas City late in the model year....

Mike, it is fun to know about you car's past, eh? As for the color fade/match, how much fade is there compared to the inside of the rear armrest (that often doesn't get much exposure)? SMS will send a sample of the leather and nylon cloth if you ask them, and you can see if both seats will need to be redone. I have to admit that I've never seen that green RM 75 interior before; it looks very rich.

But then, all RM 75 interiors look very rich!
