I have a Metz engine block that needs a new home.

Here are some pics...

Open valve block.

Used a single removeable cylinder head (don't have it)

Four cylinder, bolted to a separate crank case with six bolts.

Can anybody identify what year it is?

What is it worth?

Can deliver to Bakersfield...

It's a little rough, Keith, but probably salvageable. It looks like the standard Metz block from 1911-1915. Measure the cylinders. If they're 3-3/4", it's a "22", if 3-7/8", a "25", the latter introduced in 1915. There should be a serial number stamped on the side, but the stampings are faint, and may be obscured by the rust. Complete Metz engines are selling in the $400-600 range. You cylinder block might be worth around $125.

Phil-

It is 3-3/4" so I guess it is a 22.

Where on the block would the serial number be?

What is the G 103 F above the water inlet?

I have seen pictures of other Metz engines and I have seen the serial number on a tag on the crankcase behind the carburetor anf magneto, but not on the block. ???

I don't know if this picture is from a 22 or 25.

Keith... The photo you posted is of a post-1914 engine. When Metz first installed their new electric starter, it covered the engine serial number; the only SN on the car. This was located on the upper left rear crankcase (stamped faintly behind the water outlet on a small flat area). The plate in your photo was the "new" location on the upper front right side of the engine. Thanks to the late Franklin B. Tucker for this info.

Your rust may have obliterated the number, as it was very lightly stamped in the casting.

Phil-

I have no crank case, just the block.

Is there anywhere on the block where there would be a serial number?
