Rusty_OToole
C38 = a 1946,47 or 48 Chrysler six cylinder.70564429 is the first number issued for a 1947 C38W which I assume is the Windsor model.Your number 70590687 would be the 26,258th one of the series. Since the next year's starts with 70633017 that suggests a total of 42,330 produced putting your car a little past the middle of the year.By the way in those years the numbers starting 700 indicated a C38S which I guess would be the Royal. 705 (706 for 1948) is C38W or Windsor. 710 indicates a C38 Town and Country. In those years they did not issue different number series for different assembly plants, that started in 1949. Does your car have an ID plate indicating where it was built? They had plants in Detroit Michigan, Los Angeles California and Windsor Ontario. So, your numbers indicate a 1947 Windsor six built about 7 1/2 months into the year. Since the production year starts in September your car was probably built in April of 1947 or thereabouts.
Guest Bill-W
Prior to 1958 Chrysler Corporation used numeric serial numbers. The system began in 1924 with the Chrysler Model B as serial number 1001. These numbers cannot be decoded although they are grouped so that somethings can be determined. Also, each plant used unique serial numbers, so you can determine which plant built the car.In the case of the 1946 to 1949 (1st series) Chryslers, Windsors were built at Jefferson Ave (Detroit), Windsor, and beginning late 1948, Los Angeles. Royal models were built at Jefferson Ave and Windsor and the rest were built only at Jefferson. For the C38 models, serial number sequences were :C38S - Royal - Jefferson Avenue plant -1946 : 70,011,001 to 70,023,0221947 : 70,023,023 to 70,029,6731948 : 70,029,674 to 70,037,1801949 : 70,037,181 to 70,038,791C38W - Windsor - Jefferson Avenue plant -1946 : 70,515,001 to 70,564,4281947 : 70,564,429 to 70,633,0161948 : 70,633,017 to 70,702,4471949 : 70,702,448 to 70,717,748C38W - Windsor - LosAngeles plant -1948 : 67,001,001 to 67,001,9201949 : 67,001,921 to 67,003,000C38W - Town & Country 6 - Jefferson Avenue plant -1946 : 71,000,001 to 71,000,1271947 : 71,000,128 to 71,002,879 1948 : 71,002,880 to 71,004,055C38 - Royal & Windsor - Windsor, Ontario1946 : 9,425,441 to 9,426,2611947 : 9,426,262 to 9,431,8401948 : 9,431,841 to 9,435,440Production of 1949 Chrysler C38 Royal and Windsor models began on 01 December 1948 in the U.S. 1949 production ended the first week or so of February, 1949. No Town & Country 6 models were built as 1949 models. Contrary to what many claim, the postwar C38/C39 models ended before production of the new C45/C46 models began.Canadian 1948 production ended at the end of December, 1948, and the plant sat idle until the new 1949 C45 models began production in mid-February. Thus no 1949 C38 models in Canada. Also, C38 Royal and Windsor used the same serial number sequences, and thus you cannot tell a Royal from a Windsor by the serial number. The number, C38-93129, is the body number. The source of bodies for the Jefferson Avenue plant was the Chrysler body plant on Kercheval Avenue. The serial number, 70,590,687, falls in to the 1947 range - 70,564,429 to 70,633,016. A total of 68,588 Windsor models were built at Jefferson Avenue for 1947, and yours is the 26,159th 1947 Windsor model built there. The Canadian models used a different body tag than in the U.S., with the tag being used as early as 1935 and right through to 1965. The info consisted of -Model Number - Model Number, Series and Body StyleBody Number - The Nth unit of the Model-Series-Body Style abovePaint Code - Colour used on the carTrim Code - Interior TrimBillVancouver, BC

Did they make any 1946-48 Chrysler C38 Business Coupes in Windsor Ontario, for the Canadian market.I have never seen one to date, and have seen only a few C 38 Club Coupes, 2 being mine.........No, they built only Club Coupes and 4-door Sedans for C38 Royal and Windsor series. The long wheelbase and convertible models were imported as were 8-cylinder C39 and C40 models. No business coupes, though, were imported. The same models were built in Canada for the DeSoto Custom, importing long wheelbase sedan, convertible and Suburban models. The Canadian-built Dodge Custom had the Club Coupe, 4-door Sedan and LWB 8-passenger Sedan with the convertible imported. So, if you wanted a Chryco business coupe in 1946-48, you had to buy either a Plymouth DeLuxe (P15S) or Dodge DeLuxe (D25S).Bill Vancouver, BC

Guest bigjoe_48
I like the information you gave on that tag. and I have a question about my tag.I don't have a pic, but My serial # is 70595410 and the color code is "7", I don't know what that color is On the tag itself, under Model-Body----Paint --Trim 3825 7 23 3670292 Body Number 62476The numbers are relative to their position on the tag. and the serial # is 70595410. According to an earlier post, I figured mine to be # 30991 of the yr 47 It is a four door windsor. What are those colors, 7 & 23? The interior is a red and green plaid. How do I know whether it is a 6 or 8 passenger car. It is large inside, but is there a code for it? I bought it as it is now, an ugly orange. bigjoe_48 Edited November 1, 2010 by bigjoe_48 (see edit history)

Guest bigjoe_48
Thank you for your reply. I still don't know how to navigate this AACA thing, but I try. I did find a site that gave the paint codes for many vehicles, not knowing that the orientation of Numbers on the tag had to do, so the #23 that I looked at said some kind of tope, spelling not right but sounds like. To me It had the collor that you described as much of the rear seat is intact. Again, thank you.
