1936 Olds vin

I am trying to locate the vin on a 1936 Olds 8 Touring Coupe and all I can find is the body by Fisher tag on the driver side firewall. Where and what numbers are used for a vin?

According to The Serial Number Book for U.S. Cars: 1900-1975 by Grace Brigham, the location of Oldsmobile serial number varied over the years and included "under front seat, left side; on cowl under hood; also plate on engine; in 1930's: on flange top of frame."

The book also states that the serial number in 1936 should be between 100,001-139,925.

Thank you for the information. I found the engine serial number L212765 and the body tag info is Styyle# 36 = 1936 3611 = 2 dr,touring sedan Body # 1766, trim 2 = ? Paint 101 = black with vermillion strip.

My apraiser found that the chassis number should be located on the left chassis rail under the hood but I have not as yet found that.

Would the engine serial number be the proper number for a VIN?

The serial number and engine number are different. According to the book cited in my previous post, the engine number for your '36 Oldsmobile would fall between 202,001 - 242,915.

Thank you very much for your help. This morning I found the vin located on the left side, top of frame ahead of the firewall and under a rubber gasket for the fender...now on to DMV thanks again...

Not sure what other States consider to be the VIN, but FL uses the engine serial number as the VIN. That of course presents a real problem if the engine has been replaced and the State has not been notified of the change.

The Texas title for a 1936 Oldsmobile L-36 I just bought shows the VIN is 363819. Since the car is not yet in my possession, I assume this must be the engine serial number rather than a chassis number

Well, got pictures today of the data plate and the engine block. Looks like someone in TX used the Style No. 36-3818 as the VIN. The number on the block is L235747 which is the number that should have been used as the VIN. Can see that this is going to be fun getting this registered in FL.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a similar problem with a 47 Plymouth. According to what I have read the motor in my car is marked P25*90I504* which I believe is from a 1954 plymouth. My Bill of sale states the car is a 46 but the serial number given on the door plate starts 202 which indicates a 47? I am attempting to title in OKlahoma and so far I have been told I must go to Title search "specialist" and get some research on the cars' origin? Have you any experience with these online services which claim to be able to get a title? Can AACA help?
