DETROIT ELECTRIC 1918

I am trying to start up a 1918 Detroit Electric Coupe belonging to a friend for the local 4th of July parade. It last ran a year ago. With good advice from a knowledgeable battery guy, I have charged the 8 12 volt batteries individualy. and I intend to top them off before driving. The car has a regular brake and a parking brake, both foot brakes, side by side. There is a cufoff switch in the parking brake so that you cannot run the car when the brake is on, but it must be on to charge it.

A week ago, I put the brake on to charge it, and both brakes stuck in the down position. Is there anyone who has experienced and solved this problem? I am hesitant to take the brake assembly apart without a guide. Thanks

Does the brake pedal have a ratchet pawl to it? Our Rauch & Lang does, and you need to merely push on the top of the pedal to release it.
