Guest Microautos
Help me identify this vehicle, looks like a boat tail rear end.Thank you.George
Lozierman
Looks like about a 1929 Essex.
1937hd45
It has more 1926-28 Chrysler features to my eye, but I don't know if that was a factory tail or a later addon. Headlights are aftermarket E&J's. An upgrade to wire wheels and blackwall tires would add to the cars appeal IMO.
oldford
I think it is a '27 Essex. Car spotters guide shows the boat tail was available in late '27, and I know it was available in '28. The belt line looks more like the '27 than the '28. When I enlarged the photo, it looks like the rear hubcap is the hex shaped cap of the Essex.Frank
Guest Microautos
Thank you, I was also leaning towards the Essex, but did not have enough information. Thank you all for your input. Regards from sunny San Jose.
keiser31
Not Essex. Looks like Chrysler 1927. Radiator shell is rounded where as Essex shells were a crisper cut with edges.
1937hd45
Chrysler has normal louvers, Essex has two rows of louvers in the hood.
Guest prewar40
It's on ebay now listed as a 1928 Hudson Essex Boattail Speedabout. ebay item 290257597412
1937hd45
Thanks for the eBay link, that clears up things. It may be an early boat tail or the Standard Catalog of American Cars got its info mixed up when they stated the Speedabout wasn't offered in 1928. Hope the new owner has a better color in mind for it.
Ivan Saxton
If that is what it is, it should have a funny gearbox. Second gear is direct, which is the normal top gear where you would expect to find that; but where indirect second should be you should find an overdrive. Probably the axle ratio was a little lower. I understand that the English racing driver Raymond Mays used a hotted-up Essex six as tow unit for the trailer that carried his Brescia Bugatti. About 1963 a fellow in Sydney offered me a good 1929 8 cyl Pierce Arrow sedan, but he would not sell (probably only worth about 20 pounds at the time), but only exchange for one of those overdrive Essex Six speedsters. I have never seen one, and have no idea what happened to the Pierce.Ivan Saxton
oldford
According to my Hudson Book, the Speedabout was not offered in 1928, only 1927 and 1929. 1929 had front wheel brakes and a six cylinder engine. I should have consulted the book before my first answer was posted.Frank
