Rebuild water pump

Recommended Posts

Does any one have a place they could recommend for rebuilding water pumps or do you think I should have a local machine shop turn a new spindle for me as the old one is scored where the packing goes?

It looks like the impeller is just pressed on. I was thinking about having the spindle made slightly over size and then hone the front and rear brass bushings accordingly.

Any input would be much appreciated.

I had a machinist make the shaft. The impeller on mine was a tight fit with pin in it. You will have to hone out the brass anyway with an adjustible reamer.

I had a shaft made several years back at a machine shop and they did a good job, but it cost me 3 times what Romar sells them for. Last time I looked they were $52.50 for 12 volt car and $58.00 for 6 volt car. You can also send them the water pump and have them re-build it for you.

Tom Hannaford at Antique Auto Parts Cellar does a fine job on rebuilding water pumps, I have had several done and am pleased. Turn around has been good also. Saw an add for a shop in CA that rebuilds with new seals for a non leaking waterpump, haven't tried it yet-any body out there who has?
