Guest 49 Packard
For anyone interested, I just finished posting some pictures of my experience fixing a stiff shifting problem. This probably is not the kind of problem most people would run into, but I did nonetheless. I'm just am amateur at this kind of work - I write software for a living - so if you choose to read how I made the repair please be forgiving Click here: Stiff Shifting Repair
HH56
Excellent article. I hope you decide to keep the Electromatic. As long as it doesn't leak and is turned off, it won't hurt anything--aside from having to work around it, that is--and adds value to the car. Believe it or not, they can be made to work somewhat reliably--but it does take patience and an occasional strong word.
Guest Randy Berger
Any good programmer can determine how to fix something, even if it's something they are not familiar with Congratulations, both on the repair and having the foresight to pick up the needed part.
Packard enthus.
yeah...I agree with HH 56's post about a "leak" in the Electromatic. If our Electromatic had started leaking...well...
Guest 49 Packard
OK, I won't get all excited about the electromatic yet. It's just that up to this time the thing has just been in the way, and not too helpful to have around.Maybe someday I'll fix it up. In the meantime I'll be patient.
Guest imported_49packard
I also experienced somewhat the same problem-I was directed to a small hole between the firewall and the steering gear. I squirted a lubricant not WD40 into the hole working the gearshift back and forth. After about 10 minutes it loosened up and shifted freely. Guest 49 Packard
Hey there "other" 49Packard! Yes, that was the first thing I tried, and had high hopes. I'd done some searches before starting the work and had seen the posts about that lubrication point. I was really pretty surprised when it turned out to be what it was; that is, binding inside that bushing. The shaft was really torn up.
