I think they are left metal color. At least that is what I did, see photo at left.

Since the engines (1954-1955) are painted after total assembly I always assumed these nuts would be painted as are the gaskets etc. Other pieces such as the dash pot bracket and wire looms were added after the engine was painted so are not painted. Not 100% sure about that and hope someone who knows will correct me if wrong.

Mike, I agree with you. I always paint the valve covers separate. They look neat'er with the gaskets natural.

I painted my covers separately so that I could do a better job. For now the gaskets will show. I suppose I could touch them up with a brush after I am sure I am not going to remove the cover.

So I should not paint my oil, fuel, and vacuum lines right?

I believe MrEarl is correct, simply imagine a completed engine assembly (less carb, electricals, etc) being dunked in a vat of hit temp apple green paint and you get the mental picture.

That said, I would still do what you folks are doing-- paint them separate. Seems more aesthetically pleasing to me. Not "correct", of course-- but if you want that level of correctness, you could also make sure that none of your panels are gapped perfectly, that that there is overspray all over the place underneath, and the appropriate amount of surface rust exists on your headers and pipes.

My hat is off to those who aspire for the "correct" as-factory-assembled look. It must take an incredible amount of effort and research. Being a mere mortal, I'll go the easier "over restored" route <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Rebecca,

The nuts on the valve and plug covers on your 1950 were not painted when it left the factory.
