Hey TG, way curious as how you derive that info from that very bogus number, looks like a Buick # to me, V-12's didn't have #'s stamped on the blocks, sometimes DMV's would have the VIN # stamped up around the intake manifold on the block for registration purposes, but Lincoln never did, but maybe you know something I don't, so that would be a good thing, thank you

Rolf,

I use two sources; The Automobile Underwriters Detective Bureau 1940 Manual (attached), and the "Red Book" National Used Car Market Report. If you look at the numbers sequentially, figure in that the "A" was probably misread and should be "H", then the motor in question (81622) falls within the range produced for 1939.

Buick numbers for '39 are eight digits, nowhere close to this one. I assume that must be where the "bogus" number came from. These sources have yet to fail me...but I know what happens when I "assume" too much!

And don't come back with the "car in line-drawing isn't a Lincoln"...they used the same illustration for all, even Bantams!

The number listed was a casting number that I don't think anyone has yet deciphered. But you could be right, many Emay sellers don't know anything about what they are selling. If the engine came out of a Continental it MUST be more valuable, right?

Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure nothing new in this arcane science of engine casting #'s had loomed up, The Buick mention was a gag, no offense intended, if anyone really wants to know, the bore and rod journal sizes are smaller on the early blocks, and larger on the latest blocks, but everybody knows that, right??

The serial number for the Zephyr/Continental were stamped in the transmission housing not the block. That casting number appears on post war blocks; my 2 '47 blocks have that same number cast into the rear housing. If you look carefully at the pictures you will note that the center core plug casting is larger that the one at the front and rear of the engine. This is a true indication that this engine(at least the block) is post war. The manifold which could have been changed is also of the '42 to '48 design with the 4 bolt carburetor attachment. The manifolds were "dated" with cast in numbers also. The guys selling this engine really have no idea what they have it seems.

Hey, I don't know nothin' 'bout no V-12's, 'seppin' what I read. And, it's always good to learn something new. The change to bigger B/S was from '39 and '40, according to my "trusty" source, and of course, it's a more valuable item, 'cause it (maybe) came out of a Continental!

Y'all are the ones with the big bucks, Right?

The "box o' stuff" in the last photo of the ebay listing is a little scary.
