Chrysler Clutch Conversion/ Windsor

After much work and expense the shifting is very poor and not fixable. The con rod bearing seem to make the engine much better but shifting has many problems. I hear it is possible to install a regular clutch unit from a Dodge, Plymouth or De Soto. Has anyone done this conversion and what Is involved. Will the linkage work, or new cross member. This is the last stop before I pull the engine and trans and shove in a Small blk Chevy and make it a street rod. Dont want to do this but enough is enough. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

Don't know what you mean by shifting poor and unfixable. The stock setup is pretty trouble free and reliable if you keep the wiring in good condition and don't monkey with it.

A Dodge or Plymouth standard transmission, bellhousing and clutch will fit so far as I know. An old time mechanic told me he once did this swap over in a day using junkyard parts. The owner then tried to drive it out of the garage as if it still had the fluid drive and smashed into the wall LOL.

Have also heard of hot rodders adapting a T5 5 speed transmission to the flathead engine.

Yes the T-5 set up works well. A friend of mine did this in his 38 PLY and it works fantastic---with the overdrive he can cruise at 70-75. The T-5 you need should be out of a Camero or Firebird with the 305 engine---the gear ratios are much better out of this unit. You can rebuild any of these with the gears you need, but it gets expensive. I think Capco makes the adapter you need to mate up the tranny. Good Luck!!
