How do I remove the lower bell housing?

Recommended Posts

I have the piece loosed after removing the six side screws, the brackets on each side, and the nuts that hold the studs to the tranmission. It still needs to drop a bit in the front to get past a piece of sheet metal between the oil pan and the housing. It looks as if this piece of metal is held in place with 4 bolts into the upper half of the bell housing. I am leery of removing, or even loosening these because they must have a purpose other than holding that piece of sheet metal in place and I don't want to blindly undo whatever this is.

I am doing this to repair the stripped hole for the drain plug from underneath.

Thanks for any info and help,

Justin

Justin,

What size wrench goes on those four bolts that you don't want to touch ?

The bell-housing itself is held to the engine by several bolts that are accessible only after the fluid-coupling is removed, plus two or three more around the top, accessible only after the front floor is removed... the upper bell-housing bolts are 3/8-16, and have 9/16" heads...

If the bolts in question only seen to go through a tin cover, they are probably not doing anything

"structural"... these should have 1/2" heads or 7/16" heads...

Also, the rear motor mount "biscuits" on old MoPars tend to get squashed over time, you might need to put a jack under the oil pan ( or tranny case - use a block of wood as a pad in either case), and gently raise the engine/tranny and see if that gives you the necessary clearance to remove that pan ?

(Wish I had a '46-'48 Fluid Drive to crawl under, so I could refresh my memory... <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> )
