After connecting all the wires, temporarily jump a wire, or use a screw driver blade,

from the BAT to GEN terminal on the regulator. This should take about a second.

With the engine running the ammeter should be in the plus range.

A word of caution. After I read my last post I realize I should have said to

polarize the generator by jumpering momentarily BAT to GEN terminals on the regulator

with the igntion off, engine not running.

After this is done, start the engine and the ammeter should be in the postive range with engine revving.

The best oil to use is non detergent unless you have somehow installed a full flow filter. Back then they counted on the carbon particles settling to the bottom of the oil pan to keep the oil as clean as possible. Using a detergent oil will keep the particles in suspension and be constantly recirculated throughout the engine, not good. I use 30w non detergent in my 40 Pontiac 6 cyl. Remember to change it as often as the original GM specs say.
