Hello Birger, Cylinder heads are not a very good way to identify the different year engines, the 26H heads were used as replacements for all 5 different heads used from '36-'48, and to further complicate the issue, there were cast iron and aluminum versions too. There is no 6H designation in the parts book, there is an 06H, CI & Al, that was used in 1940 and '41, but it should have 06H 6049 or 6050 written on them. All of the heads alum. and CI, were replaced by the '42-'48 26H heads. To find which engine you have, is going to require measuring the crankshaft journals, cylinder bores, and careful examination of the block itself, it was once stated that there are 11 different cyl block castings used from '36-'48, and some are so close to one another, it is incredibly difficult to pinpoint the exact year, the main thing is that it is a sound, uncracked and usable block, good luck, Rolf

Thanks Rolf.Cylinderbores and pistons seem to be unused and looking into waterchamers no rust or scars.Tommorow I will turn it upside down and look at the bearings.Do you know anything about different oilpumps? Were the later oilpumps better than early ones and can they be identified from outside apperance?Birger

Oil Pumps are a confusing issue, the parts book lists 7 different pumps used from '36-'48. Some of the pumps bear '35-'36 Ford part #'s, we would assume these were used in the first blocks with solid valve lifters, a little more volume appears to be needed for the hydraulic lifters, then a little more, and a little more, culminating in the 56H6600, used in late '47 and '48 engines. These replace all former pumps, and although still a 50 lb pump like all the others, are said to have more volume due to the larger gears inside??? Not verified at all, but it sure makes a whale of a yarn, the pump in your engine may well have a part # on it, if so report that to us, and we will pinpoint it for you, good luck, Rolf
