Old piston rings

Hey everyone,

Is it okay to use NOS piston rings? Will they do their job, or do they get too brittle over the years?

Also, Frank, I'm sorry for not responding for so long. I've been quite busy. On the subject of my hot-start, the engine floods when sitting. How can I fix this?

Thanks

-Tom

I have used very old NOS rings with No problem. I would think the only thing that could make them change hardness and durability is being stored at a Very high temperature.

As long as the rings haven't gotten rusty and/or pitted, they should be fine.

Except as noted above, rigs don't "go bad just sitting on the shelf", unlike things that involve rubber (like brake parts or fuel pumps).

It would be worth your while to find out what the rings were made from (most rings for flathead MoPars were cast-iron); this is important when it is time to hone the cylinders - different honing patterns are left depending on what type rings are being used (cast-iron, moly, chrome). Good ring break-in is directly dependent on this.
