Guest 1959olds
I thought that was high until they sold the 70 Chevelle Malibu convertible for over $300,000. Now the Olds seems like a real bargain !!!
1937hd45
The award for "What Were You THINKING?" has to go to the guy that spent 1/2 a MILLION on the '53 and '03 Corvetts because the serial numbers matched. The Olds 88 is a true one of a kind and the new owner sure looked happy.
nearchoclatetown
Amen Bob, the '53 is a $100,000 car and the '03 might be worth another 30. I doubt if he was the only '53 owner to think of ordering matching no. cars, as I know someone that did the same. Besides only the last 3 or 4 would match. Check out the new Vintage Motorsports mag for pics and descriptions of most of the cars sold at BJ. Besides there's a good article on Mt Washington's Centennial hillclimb in it. 1937hd45
That is a good issue, thumbed through a copy at Barnes & Noble. The "Ol Gray Mare" belongs to a friend and the restoration is period perfect, nothing was overdone.
nearchoclatetown
The Carrera powered '47 VW has raced at the old and new Hershey hillclimb. Goes like stink!!
1937hd45
Is that the one with the nickname that won't pass the AACA censors?
nearchoclatetown
I don't know, let's find out. It's called the Rutan Special, because the Rutan brothers own it, but it's also called the "bathtub". I guess that could be offensive in some southern states. 1937hd45
Here is a PC translation, "excrement containment cube". That car was way ahead of the curve back in the 1950's. Wonder if there is any relation to the "Out of This World" Rutan?
Guest BillP
In the early seventies, I used to hang out at a shop in the Finger Lakes that mainly worked on those cars. The owner of the shop never once called them Volkswagens, bugs, beetles or anything other than "sh*tboxes", as if it was in chrome script on the decklid. He didn't dislike the cars, it's just what he called them. I think he would have used that term to anyone walking in the door, "I'm afraid you need a new clutch in your sh*tbox, Reverend." R W Burgess
You guys trying to press the limit here? Heh, I had a '69 bug, bought it new. It was cute, with high dollar extra's like chrome wheel covers for something like $6.00. It was a nice green, but didn't like to run low on oil....like no-oil! The former wife insisted the little red light hadn't been burning that long. I guess "boxes" like you fellows are talking about come about because of poor maintenance by unappreciative owners, right? Guest HeyPop
I was watching TLC the other night when they did the episode on OVERHAULIN' that redid Lance Armstrong's GTO. Right afterward they did a segment on Rides called "Ride's Biggest Spenders". It showed Carol Shelby's collection that included the original CSX2000 Cobra. He's turned down $10 million for it!!! The Daytona Coupes that they only made 6 of, are selling for $5 million. A 426 Hemi Cuda, restored, is bringing in excess of ... $2 million! Not bad for a car that sold for $5,000 new. And I was sweating bullets when I paid $4k for a pair of 1929 Model A's. I guess you can't take it with you...
