Timing a spitfire engine

TDC is where the piston in No1 cylnder (front) is at it's highest point in the block on the compression stroke. One mark on the crankshaft pulley indicate where this point is. The others indicate 5 degrees either side of this - this depends on what pulley was installed. Clean the rim of the pulley withe steel wool so you can clearly see the marks. The longest and deepest indicates TDC. If you're not sure, REMOVE THE COIL TO DISTRIBUTOR LEAD, and then take out No 1 spark plug. Stick your thumb over hole and have someone turn the engine over by hand. When you feel the air being forced past your thumb, stop and get a long thin rod- an uncoated brazing rod is best, old coat hanger not so good - and insert it into the cylinder until it hits the top of the piston. Slowly hand turn the engine until the wire is at the highest point. Be careful not to pinch the rod. You should see a mark very close to the pointer. This is TDC. Get a fine brush and some white paint and paint the mark. There is also a screw above No 6 for the same thing, but it can be a pain to remove.

At this point the rotor in the distributor should be pointing at No 1 plug wire. The manual states that you loosen the distributor and carefully turn it until the points just open. The C25 should be 1 degree before TDC, but to get the engine running TDC is fine.

Tighten everthing up, replace the coil lead, and away you should go!
