Exhaust Manifold Bolt Question

Recommended Posts

The exhaust manifold bolts on my 56 374 need to be replaced on re-assembly. My question is are these special bolts or just grade 5 or 8 bolts?

I don't know the original grade, but I used grade 5 on my 55 Pat a few years ago and have had no problems, i.e., they're still tight.

Be extra careful about bolt length because all but the outermost exhaust manifold bolt holes intersect the head bolt holes. Too long a bolt will bottom on the head bolt. This could result in improper clamping force on the exhaust manifold and/or lock the head bolt so that it cannot be removed later.

Hello, Larry...

There was lengthy discussion about 1+ years ago concerning bolt strength. I had a metallurgical study performed at work and came up with some results, that, may, or, may not help, however, give you some direction.

Go to the top, click on "Search", type in "bolts", or, "bolt strength", under time frame, click on "all".

By all means, please ask should you not receive a satisfactory answer within the Bolt Strength threads. I have a few metallurgist' at my disposal to further assist.

Speaking of bolts is the potential difference great enough between a stainless steel bolt and cast iron block to cause corrosion or at least enough to worry about?

Hello, JT...

I am not a bolt manufacturer (in the foundry/machining business), however, I would not think there should be concerns to worry over. The only thing, if it applies, is originality.

If you can get a sample (1) out any auto supply house should be able to supply a set of studs to fit without a problem, the ones for my 54 (straight 8) where in the assorted manifolds bolt section at the local Canadian Tire.

Larry, I think grade 5 or better bolts would work just fine. You will need two 3/8-16 X 1 1/8 and two 3/8-16 X 2 1/8. Make sure of the length and also make sure you put some never-sieze on them before you install them.
