Brain Trust Question: Duplicate Production Sequence Numbers

I toss this out in hopes of getting an answer or answers that makes at least partial sense...

Can two Reatta's, both of the SAME model year, have identical Production Sequence Numbers in their VIN's?

To further clarify, using my 1991 as an example (1G4EC13L7MB901445), can another 1991 unit exist with the Production Sequence Number 901445?

+++ YES, I am aware by looking in the database and seeing numerous examples, this is fact across DIFFERENT model years.

+++ NO, I do not know of or have two Reatta's of the same model year in front of me with the same Production Sequence Number.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

a) since all were produced at the same plant, it is unlikely.

B) I recall something about two Camaros (1969 ?) being produced with the same VIN though a clerical error so is possible.

For many reasons, the vin number of a vehicle is as important as the serial number on paper money. The vin number is logged and tracked by the auto manufacturer for future safety and emissions recalls. With the tracking (computer) used to build cars, even when the Reattas were made, any duplicated operation on the same vin number would be caught.

Each model year Reatta started with 900000 and continued in sequence until the end of that model year, then the sequence started again. It is unlikely that any early vins went to the public. The manufacturer uses these early cars to verify fit and finish and also uses these cars to show dealers in early previews and for photos. They then scrap the cars, which gives them a tax advantage since they did not make a profit on the cars.

If you are not aware of the Reatta vin number break-down here is the info.

Lets take a random example like 1G4EC33C8LB900999

1 = US BUILT CAR

G = MANUFACTURER...GENERAL MOTORS

4 = CAR LINE...BUICK

EC = REATTA (EZ WOULD = RIVIERA)

3 = BODY STYLE CONVERTIBLE (1= COUPE)

3 = AUTOMATIC SEAT BELTS

C = ENGINE CODE...C IS THE 3800 USED IN 1988-1990

8 = CHECK DIGIT...THIS IS A MATHMATIC NUMBER SEQUENCE TO FOIL THEFT/DUPLICATION

L = MODEL YEAR... J = 1988, K = 1989, L = 1990, AND M =1991

B = ASSEMBLY PLANT..B = LANSING MICH.

900999 = THE PRODUCTION SEQUENCE

I hope this makes sense and explains the vin number.

Since these cars were assembled by hand and construction

orders placed in a person's hand it is impossible in a

normal work area. However some ideas come to mind.

1. Someone made a duplicate VIN and drove off with one car

and the other is shipped.

2. Rejected cars VINs are reused and the rejected car is put

back on the road.

3. Parts are used to repair a car {but this would only likely

be a part tag and not VIN tag}
